Less than a month after Will Smith’s “After Earth” crashed at the box office, Sony finds itself in another predicament with Roland Emmerich’s “White House Down.”
The $150 million action thriller, starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, is the studio’s most expensive film of the summer but may debut as poorly as fourth place this weekend with a projected $27 million.
Not only are the early estimates soft for a project Sony bought in a record spec deal for $3 million in 2012, it’s actually worse than this year’s other White House thriller, “Olympus Has Fallen,” which opened to $30.8 million for FilmDistrict on a much smaller budget ($70 million).

Give us a brief plot line. I actually have no idea what the movie is about even though I’ve seen the ad a few times.

RED 2: "Red" was incredible. Lots of action and John Malcovic was hilarious!
Despicable Me 2: The original is one of my favorite movies on "GruRay!" The Minions are the best! Can't wait for this one!
Unfortunately, due to physical issues, I really can't go see a movie at the theaters. It's been about 7 years since I've been to a theater. So I'll have to wait until they're released on DVD/BluRay.
Oh, and I'm waiting to see "The Hobbit" until the studio releases the extended edition this Christmas.

It looks like a more action/adventure “Olympus Has Fallen”, but I wouldn’t know, as I have seen neither.
Ever notice how often Hollywood puts out two nearly identical movies during the summer?
We had two volcano movies (Dante’s Peak and Volcano), two comet/asteroid movies (Deep Impact and Armageddon), and now two “White House under siege” movies. There are many more examples of this over recent years.
It clearly indicates that Hollywood is out of original ideas (which certainly isn’t news to anyone who’s gone to the theater lately). It also indicates that the studios spy on each other and steal from each other on a regular basis.
I’d just like to see one movie where I don’t sit there thinking that I could have written a better script in five minutes.

A former military guy is visiting the White House with his daughter. SPOILER ALERT: Right winger types want to get rid of the Obama government (of course the movie President has a different name, but the whole country knows who it really is about) with the help of Big Business/Military Establishment. Visiting guy helps the President kick A$$, saves his own daughter from the bad guys, and saves the country from the Right.
Some fairly good action scenes if you can ignore the PC stuff and the obvious jabs at the right.
Terrorists captured the White House? Really?
The communists and Muslim Brotherhood took it over in 2009. Top that, Hollywood.

I do agree with you. I go to a movie to be entertained and I love films. I could give a crap about the politics of the actors.
FYI: An American Carol cost an estimated $12,000,000 to produce and brought in $7,000,000 in domestic box office. A loss, but hardly a huge flop by Hollywood Standards. As things go, it made money through video rentals and sales.
BTW: I didn’t see it. Didn’t look funny to me.
My 21 year old daughter went with her husband to see it last night. She texted me half-way through it, furious.
“This movie is kinda pissing me off. Basically a bunch of republicans and disgruntled soldiers get together to take out our black president.”
Why was she mad? REPUBLICANS and the MILITARY (she’s a patriotic Army Brat) had attacked the White House to overthrow a black president.
Really? Even Rotten Tomatoes recognized this as obvious political crap. (And RT also said that the guy in the movie is much more ‘black’ and ‘hip’ than our current president.)
I comforted her by reminding her that today’s Republican’s are spineless cowards who’d fold at a moment’s notice. Everyone knows this.
Thus, the movie is complete fiction and she is free to enjoy the explosions and Channing Tatum’s hotness.
I saw it tonight. The theater was about two thirds full.
The movie was fine. If you wish to suspend reality a little bit. Well, pretty much put reality out of your mind altogether.
Strictly a shoot’em up, right wing extremism terrorists getting back at the government. You know, what Hollywood thinks of US!
I know Jamie Foxx is not popular around here, but he was OK in this. Yes, clearly he was Obama. But he was not made into anything macho.
Overall, for a summer action movie it was OK. Not great, but OK.
World War Z was only marginally better.
It’s not primarily an issue of talent, it’s primarily an issue of who has their hands on the levers of power in Hollywood.
I think the issue that most conservatives have, is that if these people were simply making a movie, it wouldn’t be an issue. But the vast majority of them are into liberal advocacy and promotion of liberal policies, and they use their celebrity as a platform.
I can’t help feeling that way about this kind of stuff nowadays. A couple years ago, I went to see a Roger Waters concert, because I used to love Pink Floyd.
This was right around the 2004 election. I went with about 15 other people, and I have to tell you… I was steaming the entire time. Literally steaming. But I didn’t say anything… If someone didn’t feel the way that I did, I didn’t want to ruin the evening for them, so I sat there and stewed.
It was the most anti-American, liberal, Marxist thing that I’ve ever paid money to go see. The entire show was accompanied by slideshows and video in the background that were anti-capitalist, anti-Israel, and anti-American. Near the end, they released into the air a huge inflatable pig that looked to be about the size of a small house. On one side it said “F*ck Bush” and on the other side it had the message “Vote Democrat” painted on it.
Now, most people might reasonably say to me: “Well, it was Roger Waters. What did you expect?”
And that is true enough. But I will say that it ruined going to concerts for me, and it ruined any enjoyment I still got out of listening to Pink Floyd. I don’t think that I have listened to any Pink Floyd since that day.
The point is, I don’t go around to every telling them to trash their Pink Floyd music. I don’t tell them to not buy the music. And I don’t tell them not to listen to it.
I just can’t listen to it. And it’s the same way with many Hollywood types for me now. One of my favorite movies, especially silly comedy movies, was the Jim Carrey movie “Liar, liar”. But after listening to him for the last few years, I just can’t bring myself to laugh at his stuff. His political advocacy did the same thing for his material that OJ Simpson did to my fondness for the “Naked Gun” movies. Just seeing O.J. Simpson in those takes a lot of silly fun out of it.

I really don’t get ongoing obsession that every movie or TV show is somehow a political statement. They just aren’t. Some are . .. most are just a Studio trying to make money. It’s just capitalism.
A few years ago, I could have ignored the PC stuff, not anymore. In NYC the price of a movie ticket is $20.00 and I'll be damned if I'll pay hollywood that much to basically insult what I believe in. I'm sick of PC, homosexual agenda or just plain old jabs at conservatives that seem to be in most movies to one degree or another.
That movie sucked jaw hen it came out, and it hasn’t held up very well. And not from a political standpoint—but the writing, photography and sets were horrible. It looked like a bad movie of the week.

Now that is disappointing! I wanted to see WWZ. I will w8 for video. I usually do. I have too many kids at home 2go 2 movies.
