Try as they did, Lenin, Stalin, and all the rest could not stamp out the Russian Orthodox Church and the religious
spirit of a people (or of each individual person).

Some Buddist temples are the most elaborate and ornate structures I’ve ever seen and maybe even a step above those but those are some mighty fine looking churches. Definitely a dfferent architectural style than we have here in the U.S.

The one with the green domes is the church of St. Sophia in Kiev, built for Prince Yaroslav by Byzantine craftsmen in 1099. It is very beautiful inside as well as out.

The Ukrainians have left some of the parging off of the exterior walls to reveal the ancient Byzantine brick which is different from what we use today.

You can see some fine examples here in Western Pennsylvania. I know of one particular corner where a Russian Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholic Church sit next to one another. Something you would never see over there.

Thanks for posting. Beautiful churches.

Coming from Polish ancestry, what I find most beautiful about Russians and Eastern Europeans, is the old peasant faith. I would describe my father's faith in that way. He didn't learn it from a book, but it was in his heart.

The prize of them all of course is the gigantic Cathedral of Christ the Savior (Храм Христа Спасителя) in Moscow:

Google image search on 'Храм Христа Спасителя'

That one has been rebuilt from scratch/memory after the fall of the CCCP, the commies had torn the original down and made a swimming pool for themselves on the premises.
