Long-simmering tensions between the current members of Cheap Trick and the bands absentee drummer, Bun E. Carlos, appear to be boiling over into the courtroom.
Carlos, a founding member of Cheap Trick, remained a fixture of the lineup until March 2010, when the band released a statement announcing that he is not currently the touring drummer for Cheap Trick. Bun E. remains a band member. Everyone is healthy and Cheap Trick will continue to tour as planned. While that made it sound like Carlos absence was temporary, hes remained in exile, even during the bands sporadic forays into the studio. As the drummer put it in a 2012 interview, Im still in the band, but I dont tour, I dont hear from them. I prefer to be out on the road performing with them. Maybe well kiss and make up.
That doesnt appear likely in the wake of this weeks news that Carlos, along with former Cheap Trick manager David Frey, is suing the other members of the band. Although Carlos and Frey have separate grievances with the group, it all boils down to one thing: money.
According to his portion of the suit, Carlos is no longer required to participate in live performances by the band, but remains a full member of the band, with the same salary and royalties that entails. Unfortunately, Carlos asserts that the other members of Cheap Trick have failed to live up to their end of the bargain by, among other things, refusing to allow Carlos to participate in any of the activities of the band (including the recording of a new studio album), entering into numerous contracts on behalf of the Cheap Trick Companies without Carloss consent and otherwise preventing Carlos from participating in the management and operations of the Cheap Trick Companies.
Frey, meanwhile, was apparently ousted as the bands manager in July of 2012 although the suit claims his firing is null and void because his contract required a unanimous vote, and since Carlos wasnt involved in the decision, it doesnt count. Worse, Frey claims that he fronted the group more than $350,000 to cover medical expenses following the disastrous stage collapse at its 2011 Ottawa Bluesfest appearance, and is still waiting to be paid back the balance of what hes owed.
‘Dream Police’ Alert — 1980s
The drummer was saying “I want you to want ME”.
(sorry, couldn’t resist)
He'll never 'Surrender'... Bada Bing!
I think Rick Nielsen wanted his son to be drummer, so he ran Bun E. out of the band. Tom Peterson is lucky to have a job as bass player, considering he can’t really play bass. LOL Robin Zander has always had a great voice!
At least Bun E is no Carlos Danger.
Bun E Carlos to rest of the Band:
If you want my drums, you got them....
Love Cheap Trick ... I’m a fan!
Bun E. Carlos out of the band? Drum ROLL please! Oh, Ain’t that a shame!
I thought that announcement about Carlos was kinda weird when I saw it their website a while back.
When I lived in Milwaukee, Robin had a band with his brother. They were called “Zander,” I used to borrow amps from them, as I was equipment poor. Robin was a nice guy, with a stunning girlfriend who ended up as one of Jimi’s squeezes. I ended up living with a local gal who was one of Jimi’s one night stands, from when he played a gig at The Scene club. Some very interesting medical fallout from that deal!
Couldn't hear for three days because of a ringing in my ears after saw them in '82. Loved Cheap Trick.
Saw them with Axe and Shooting Star that same year in Lakeland FL. Tickets....$14 festival seating. Them were the daze...
later
Ain’t that a shame.
