TORONTO - In a heartbreaking press conference, the mother of a toddler who died a 100% preventable death in a Vaughan home daycare said she and her husband are launching a $3.5-million lawsuit to prevent other parents from experiencing their nightmare.
Its devastating; its just wrong, Ekaterina Evtropova said Thursday as her husband, Vycheslav Ravikovich, sat by her side. Its wrong to put your healthy two-year-old in a daycare and then just come to face the fact that youre not going to see her anymore.
Their daughter had attended the Russian-speaking home daycare at 343 Yellowood Circle for a year while her parents worked and attended school.
On July 8, the childs father got a devastating phone call.
He went straight there just to find our child was dead, Evtropova said.
In their statement of claim, they allege daycare owners Olena Panfilova, Oleksandr Rabadanov, Ruslan Rabadanov, Katerina Rabadanov, Inna Koganova and Valery Koganov were negligent by failing to provide adequate care and supervision of Eva, exceeded the number of children allowed in an unlicensed daycare and failed to ensure staff were properly trained in emergency first aid.
The lawsuit also claims the ministry of education failed to properly inspect, investigate and regulate the daycare despite it being the subject of previous complaints.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
Lawyer Patrick Brown alleged the daycare had 27 children at the time and the parents were never aware it was operating at over-capacity.
He also told reporters that while the coroner has not given the cause of death, they have been told Evas death was preventable.
To me, she was everything, Evtropova said of the couples only child.
Now I have a feeling that I have nothing to live for.
How very sad! May God comfort the parents.
My first question is, the parties involved, are they legal citizens of Canada?
Would that make it any less tragic?
I have no idea why parents put a little child in the care of others all day. There are ways for every parent to stay home with their child
$3.5-million
The same “god” who allowed that baby to die? Quit believing that old fairy tale.
I wish someone would tell my daughter in law that. I watched her at her home until one day I had to take her back to my home for an emergency, the next day she was in daycare.
,
In my experience because they get themselves into financial situations where they think they have no choice.
Like you said though, there are ways, you just have to start make choices accordingly from the beginning. It means getting used to one wage earner and the smaller house, smaller budget, less vacations & toys, and harder work that comes with it.
