First- I acknowledge that Oprah has been charitable. She’s given away tons of stuff on her show too- all probably donated as tax write offs by the companies who supplied them. She is also a capable actress and I don’t find her personally reprehensible-just her politics. As a woman I don’t see ‘all that she has accomplished’. She no doubt took advantage of people being afraid to tell her no in some cases BECAUSE of her race. Hey- whatever you have to do, but-if you go to another country( was it her first time there?) and you can tell that the people waiting on you did not have ‘the best command of English’- why not write it off as that? No- she screams ‘racism’. The shopkeeper said not so- so it’s their word against the famous, black, Oprah who took offense. And so the thought police mentality crosses another border. Will Oprah accept their explanation and apology, or go on being a victim and offended forever? Her character is being exposed here-and her ‘accomplishments’ and charitable donations will be overshadowed by it-IMO.
And I still think it’s hideous and hypocritical for ANY Hollywood types to cruise around in private jets for hamburgers( Harrison Ford) or spend as much as most people don’t make in a year on a purse while bemoaning inequality on ANY level. That’s my take on it- I don’t expect universal agreement.
Regarding the incident itself, my opinions are shaded by my own experiences while working upscale retail in college, and my predisposition is not favorable towards Oprah.
Are you kidding me right now? Do you really think she created and leads one of the wealthiest media companies in the world just from playing the race card?
Maybe this country still is as racist as she thinks.
