I would much rather wait an hour at the bus and be confined to where the bus route goes/s

Sure gas costs more, but the real problem is the cars! Just look at them. They all look the same. I can’t tell the make of most cars untill I see the logo on the front or back. And some manufactures don’t even give you a logo for ID.

A friend and I recently flew to Philadelphia, the starting point for spending a few days on the east coast, before celebrating the 50th birthday of an old Navy buddy.

We rented what I'd call a mid-sized car: a Toyota Camry. Very reasonably priced.

We drove southeast toward Atlantic City, and paid about $7-8 dollars to cross bridges and toll roads. We stayed a night, and drove north, to New York City, the next day. We probably paid another $12 - $15 in tolls, going through New Jersey. Crossing through the Holland Tunnel, to Manhattan, we paid about $13. We reached our hotel in mid-town Manhattan, and we paid $27 for 24 hours of valet parking. (We actually thought that was a good deal.)

The next day, we paid another $13 or so to go through the Brooklyn Tunnel, and another few dollars to cross the Verrazano Bridge. We headed south on one of the NJ expressways, and paid a few more dollars before we arrived in the Asbury Park area. The following day, we paid another $5-7 driving back to Philadelphia. We filled up the tank for around $3.50/gallon, which we figured was about the going rate nationwide.

It's pretty clear to me, they do not want people driving cars in this area of the country. Tolls in and out of Manhattan are prohibitive, and the other interstate tolls are a constant bleed of any singles or change you might have in your pockets.

It's true, there are numerous mass-transit resources available. With the tax base and the geography, it lends itself well to support such systems. They keep talking about mass-transit here in Indianapolis, but we have neither the population or the resources to support such a system. Let me have my car, and let me do the driving.

I should have said the heavy traffic makes me drive less, not everyone in general. I don’t have to commute because I’m retired.

That’s why Americans aren’t driving for entertainment anymore

For me, anyway, gas was one of the easiest places to cut back.

Mrs WBill and I used to get in the car and go where we pleased. No more.

Now, I plan shopping trips on my way home from work. If we shop on the weekends, then we "go to town" ... plan the trip out to make numerous stops, and so on. If it can wait, we wait.

When gas is $3.50 / gal, that's what needs to be done. I'm sure that we're not the only couple who feel this way.

One plus, I suppose, is that the small stores local to me are getting my business. Makes no sense to spend $6 in gas driving "into town", to save a buck on some single necessity.

The problem with mass transit is that the government has been all over it for many decades. It all used to be privately owned and operated, and then along came taxation, regulation, you name it. It’d be a nice alternative in private hands, but in public hands, it’s being used as a control tool; same with the government funding of roads.

“The problem with mass transit is that the government has been all over it for many decades.”

The other problem with mass transit is crime which the government chooses not to stop. I used to ride the Metro when visiting Washington, DC. After reading about a number of attacks by urban youth, I’ve chosen to use alternative transportation.

C4C was certainly a crony capitalist venture by the Baraqqis.
But it only removed .27% of the US vehicle fleet, hardly a significant number.

Another factor is the hassle on the roads. It's just not fun on the interstate to be jammed between those behometh tractor trailers and giant SUVs and not even able to see road signs. For my generation, cars were freedom and fun, hanging out at the car stop, cruisin', flirtin' with the guys, breaking curfew, not worrying about much...

Ahhh, for the bad ol' days. Thing is they weren't that bad. Just more fun.

Just this week the Federal Highway Administration reported vehicle miles traveled during the first half of 2013 were down slightly, continuing the trend.

Code words for "We have to raise the gas tax."

***Driving in America has stalled,***

What a joke! Ever been on Turner Turnpike between Tulsa and OKC? Packed!

How about the interstate between Logan UT and Price? If you drive the speed limit you are going TOO SLOW!

I was on both of these this summer.

Maybe they are. But they are from the Federal Highway Administration (same govt that gives us employment stats), and US Public Interest Group, (which in my state anyway is close to being a bunch of commies). So I am a bit suspect.

“(FreeRepublic really needs a “like” button)”

Go to hell!!!

Now was that nice?

Sometimes there are posts that really hit the spot, that need to be applauded. It would be so much easier if we had some way to say "I AGREE ENTIRELY" rather than having to go through the entire posting/OH rats I forgot to preview/posting again process.

Now is merely having that idea and voicing it such a serious sin that you'd send someone to eternal damnation for it?

(It really strikes me as odd since you've never seemed to be islamic to me)
