They all had the theme of one-sided phone conversations and could reduce a roomful of college students to rolling on the floor with laughter. Mom and Dad had a number of his LP's....and I suspect that they were two of the many college students reduced to rolling around on the floor with laughter.

Also... like Jack Benny, it's not what Newhart says that's funny. It's what he doesn't say.

It's all in the pauses. A genius for comedic timing.
