Popular Bathroom Wipes Blamed For Sewer Clogs Nationwide
CBS/AP ^ | September 23, 2013 8:05 AM

The National Association of Clean Water Agencies, which represents 300 wastewater agencies, says it has been hearing complaints about wipes from sewer systems big and small for about the past four years.

That roughly coincides with the ramped-up marketing of the “flushable cleansing cloths” as a cleaner, fresher option than dry toilet paper alone. A trade group says wipes are a $6 billion-a-year industry, with sales of consumer wipes increasing nearly 5 percent a year since 2007 and expected to grow at a rate of 6 percent annually for the next five years.

...

Manufacturers insist wipes labeled flushable aren’t the problem, pointing instead to baby and other cleaning wipes marked as nonflushable that are often being used by adults.

“My team regularly goes sewer diving” to analyze what’s causing problems, said Trina McCormick, a senior manager at Kimberly-Clark Corp., maker of Cottonelle. “We’ve seen the majority, 90 percent in fact, are items that are not supposed to be flushed, like paper towels, feminine products or baby wipes.”

If they didn’t regulate the amount of water down to nearly nothing per flush, this might not be the problem that it is.

If they are strong enough to be wet and not tear, then they are NOT made for flushing, no matter what they say.

Are these the ones that several NFL linemen are promoting (according to Rush)? “Defunk your Drawers”, “Clean your Crack” or something like that...

Prelude to banning them.

I know some folks with their heads in the sand who have no problem with gov't bans on guns, etc. But I bet they'll have a HUGE problem with the gov't banning their convenient little wet nappies.

This can’t be.
Hollyweird dictated that people only use one square.

The people doing this are from other countries and this is not a new issue.

They don’t have access to running water or what we think of as a toilet.

Additionally, they live in homes/apartments that are rented and think that the plumbing just gets magically fixed.

If they had to pay for the repairs they would learn in short order what goes in the toilet and what goes in the trash.

I’m reminded of a sign in a bathroom, in Puerto Aventura, Mexico:

“Do not put anything in this toilet that was eaten first!”

...sewer diving...

The very definition of a dirty job, especially inspections/repairs conducted while the system is operational. (Yes, this happens frequently.) You learn to jump out of the way when you hear certain sounds.

If babies are the target, they are called baby wipes. If NFL linemen, then perhaps mud flaps would be a better term.

And if the sewers can’t handle them, I say make bigger sewers because the ladies in my family would never, ever give up using this essential equipment.

“Manufacturers insist wipes labeled flushable aren’t the problem,”

Oh yes they damned well are. They DO NOT break down like toilet tissue does.

I’ve been on countless calls to snake lines as big as 3 and 4 inches with these damned things blocking them. I have had to cut them off my snake with a sharp knife.

Something like this is NOT flushable I don’t care what it says on the package.

If you use them with a septic system, they will also destroy it in short order.

Low flow toilets make the likelihood of clogging greater but the lines will plug with a high flow toilet also.

You might as well be trying to flush flannel rags down the toilet.

I got some 1950’s-era commodes with the new investment property. They are coming with me when I sell it. You can flush more-or-less anything down these puppies.

I’ve noticed in the last several years, people using paper towels as toilet paper.
This has lead to paper towels being thinner.
