Fukushima radiation worse than feared - experts
Voice of Russia ^ | October 14, 2013 | Sergey Duz

IAEA experts are trying on the ground to sort out work to do away with the aftermath of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident. But the situation grows increasingly tense despite all efforts by the government.

Hundreds of tons of radioactive water leaked out of the reservoirs and reached the subterranean waters just days ago. It may have likewise leaked into the ocean, says an expert in nuclear physics and nuclear power generation, Igor Ostretsov, Doctor of Engineering.

“I am absolutely certain that the radioactive water leaks into the ocean have never stopped, because the plant molten corium is continuously cooled. The water used in the cooling is then stored in radioactive water storage tanks. A lot of radioactive water has been accumulated there to date. A lot of water is required for cooling. The tanks are actually non-durable and often overfilled, resulting in overflows. But this is not reported unless a pipe bursts”.

A state of emergency should now be declared throughout the world community. Japan needs international control, Tokyo can’t manage it on its own. Whatever the world nations can offer to cope with the situation should be used, or else the northern part of the Pacific will be contaminated. Discharging radioactive water into tanks and keeping them is pointless. Japan clearly needs an immediate extraordinary solution.

As of today, the radiation levels around the plant are so high that staying there for four hours would be lethal for a person. But the Japanese either failed or chose not to use the experience of Russian liquidators who tackled a similar situation at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986, says Professor of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, Vladimir Kuznetsov.

It's sad that it has taken so long for someone to say this. Our nuclear experts and those of the west support each other by remaining silent and saying encouraging things downplaying the severity no matter what happens (e.g., the day the disaster started this board was flooded with nuke experts who sneered at alarmists instead of providing truthful insight). Since Russia already experienced Chernobyl (they were then Soviet), they aren't working as hard to deny Fukushima occurred and is serious. He states obvious facts that the West's nuke industry won't admit to -like radioactive water has continuously flowed into the ocean since the event occurred. Finally someone said it. They tanks they errected to contain some of the water are not meant to last even 5 years - they were just for show. I believe Japan intends to flush the corium into the ocean like a stain while claiming that they are handling it in a pristine manner.

"Background radiation is 400 times the normal levels in towns just 10 kilometres away from the crippled nuclear plant”

You won't hear this kind of concern from anyone still working in nuke power because they would be banished from that religion and declared a raving lunatic (e.g., Gofman).

Sure , you can trust your Government !!

The real question is government to serve you ,..
or exists for you to serve them !
That's it , ..in a nutshell .

I’ve seen a lot of fear-mongering on this subject and I honestly believe that’s what it is.

If it were such a monumental disaster, then it would be addressed as one. Not even as bad as Chernobyl, not even close.

It’s a mess and their current solution is not working.

I was on google-earth using a feature where you can see historical images of an area. All they’re doing is building more and more tanks for contaminated water. They’re going to run out of real estate for tanks eventually.

I have read here on Freep that South Korean fishmongers are going broke.
No one wants to buy nuclear polluted fish, even though the fish offered for sale are caught elswhere, in other countries .
Who can blame the people for not trusting government when they lie about the levels of radiation to their own people .
You are responsible for maintaining your own health.

Wow. Imagine that. You get the truth from The Voice of Russia. Not The Voice of America. My. My. How things have changed.

In other news, another Typhoon is headed toward Fukushima. In 36 hours, if projections hold true, the area will be hit with Typhoon winds and Typhoon rains. This one is tracking to go right up the east coast of Japan. Will be traveling myself during that time frame and will try to keep an eye on the news.

Not even as bad as Chernobyl, not even close.

Three reactors have melted down and the radiation underground has a pathway to be distributed across the planet via the ocean. Chernobyl had more atmospheric releases over a short time frame, but there is no end in sight for Fukushimna large scale releases through the ocean and also its smaller scale releases through the atmosphere. It is already worse then Chernobyl with no end in sight now. The government of Japan and Tepco have been caught lying about the situation and the radiation releases more times then can be counted.

Yes, I thought it was ironic too. But the Russians did their share of lying when it was their turn - they made it illegal for doctors to report death and illnesses occurring from exposure to radiation for a bout 3 years after their disaster etc. They can’t really “save face” at this point but they are still going to be effected by Japan’s hiding and lying.

So governments lack the ability to self analyze and self correct. They have no problems however pointing out the errors of other governments.

Chernobyl contamination was airborne , and difficult to hide.
The Russian Govt. wasn't initially as forthcomming with information as they did several weeks later.
I have read that waterborne radiation from Fukishema will arrive offshore from the continential U.S. in about 3 years.
The last I knew, Fukishema radiation is still leaking into the sea , and hasn't been stopped ..
..so the contamination continues to this day.

I’m with FreedomStar. “The solution to pollution is dilution” is a common saying in the sciences, and there is a reason for that. The ocean is vast.

That is the heart of the problem - the government should not be allowed to exclude the public and “regulate itself.”

I also have seen the fear mongering. However, I have also seen major cover ups on both sides of the Pacific.
It’s not the fear mongering that has me worried.

The ocean is vast.

The problem is bioaccumulation. They have just discovered that fish are taking up the Cesium found offshore Fukushima at levels that are much higher then anticipated.

Same thing happens on economic threads. A lot of paid disinformants out there - and FReepers often get sucked into arguing with them.

I was in a Kmart in Stockton California. The power went out for a few moments and suddenly a stampede headed for the door. The moment darkness fell, numerous people in the store ran outside with whatever merchandise they were holding at the time. I was dazed with shock when the lights went back on and the store was nearly empty - the power wasn’t off for more than 2 minutes. How could so many people have thievery in their hearts so that they could instantly take advantage of a momentary power loss? The store had been filled with white, low income persons - some of the holding the hands of children as they browsed through the store, looking like ordinary people. But they were takers...it was like a scene from the movie “The Body Snatchers.”

I am guilty of this! I got sucked into arguing with people highly skilled at leading to other topics. I ended up “losing” an argument about the cost of the cover the Ukrainians were building over Chernobyl because I converted Euros to Dollars incorrectly - I shake my head at how silly I was to let them lead me all over the place when the discussion was actually about what was happening that day in Japan. By the time other shills showed up to yell “Coal!” at me, insisting that I had no credibility re Fukushima unless I was thoroughly cognizant of the fine points of coal - this while corium was pooling below 3 separate reactors and Spent Fuel Pools lay uncovered in damaged structures located in an earthquake zone!!! They (disinformation experts) are good at what they do, aren’t they? Well, that’s my excuse. (laughing at myself)

I HAVE NO idea how my post 17 ended up on this thread instead of the Walmart thread. I apologize for the error.
