This isn’t really some new malfeasance that the EU cooked up.
Protection of Designations of Origin date back at least to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Intellectual Property of 1883. (All major nations were party to that from the beginning.)
Of course one wonders why the town Stilton is not part of that particular Designation of Origin.
