Family fights to include ‘Jesus’ on grave marker at city-owned cemetery

The family of a Colorado preacher’s wife is still fuming after the director of the city-owned cemetery refused to engrave her final resting place with the name ‘Jesus’ because it might offend people. The city eventually reversed course under public pressure.

“We were in disbelief,” said Stacy Adams, the daughter-in-law of Linda Baker. “Who tries to censor Jesus from a cemetery?”

“At first they told us it wouldn’t fit,” Adams said. “But after we kept pushing them the cemetery director told us that it might offend somebody. They weren’t going to allow it.”

The family was devastated and asked the cemetery director to reconsider. He refused. “He said, ‘What if somebody wanted to put a swastika?”

The family then took their concerns to the Sterling city manager – but once again they were rebuffed. She said city officials kept telling them that people would be offended by the name of Christ. So the family decided to post their plight on Facebook – and that’s when the city had a change of heart.

Mrs. Baker’s marker should be finished in the coming days as her family continues the grieving process. But Adams can’t help but wonder who “people are so fearful of one name that they would go to such lengths to try and eliminate it.”

It’s outrageous that a grieving American family had to fight and cajole a city government to allow them to engage in their Constitutional rights. As for the cemetery manager—comparing the name of Jesus to a swastika? Really, sir? My only wish is that on Judgment Day Mrs. Baker is standing at the Pearly Gates watching you explain yourself to Saint Peter.

The war on Christianity in this country is so widespread and perverse, it touches every area of life.

This pathetic scumbag Mikey Weinstein, who took God out of the military oath, needs to drop dead.

It started with the banning of Christmas trees!

None of us really thought it would END with just that....did we?

It’s her final resting place. If people are offended by words engraved on her tombstone, that’s their problem.

So.... what if someone’s first name is Jesus? That wouldn’t be allowed on the headstone??

I would never have guessed they’d change the oath in the air force though. Why not make the entire damn oath optional? Who are those who do not invoke God swearing an oath by? Who are they charging to hold them to account? Themselves?

I’d just have an unspoken policy of ostracizing those who fail to take the full oath.

The cemetery director equated the name of Jesus with a swastika? What the hell is wrong with him?

“He said, ‘What if somebody wanted to put a swastika?”

Perhaps like a Buddhist?

Has anyone seen “Last Ounce of Courage”? Just watched it tonight and it nails the oppression of our freedom.

Why is it only the anti-Jesus people who must not be offended? Pro-Jesus people, like this family, can be offended with impunity, apparently.

The person that Todd Starnes was so concerned about protecting appears to be parks and cemetery manager Wade Gandee.

After further searching I am not sure if Gandee is the person who made the decision or not. Looks like he got a promotion to Parks, Library, Recreation director in September so maybe it was NOT him who made the call.

It is really pathetic that the city manager failed to rectify this situation at the outset instead of having to be embarassed on a national scale.

At least things came out OK in the end.
