Is this a precursor to another Maunder Minimum situation, where the sunspot activity drops to essentially zero for decades? That could be bad news for food production, since much of the world's climate at higher latitudes may make Canada, northern Europe and much of Russia unusable for agriculture.

Not only that, colder historically has meant dryer, also impacting agriculture. Our current world system can handle warming MUCH better than cooling.

Welcome King Barack "Canute" Obama the Great.....

...Obama issues an Executive Order to the Sun...

....to increase it's magnetic field....

and make a good crop of sunspots before elections in 2016....

(PhysOrg.com) -- Sunspot formation is triggered by a magnetic field, which scientists say is steadily declining. They predict that by 2016 there may be no remaining sunspots, and the sun may stay spotless for several decades.

The last time the sunspots disappeared altogether was in the 17th and 18th century, and coincided with a lengthy cool period on the planet known as the Little Ice Age....and lasted 400 years.

Good luck surviving with no electricity and GE modified seeds.

If we have another Maunder Minimum this world is going to be thrown into chaos. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few billion starve.

UH, OH....

The Maunder Minimum coincided with the middle—and coldest part—of the Little Ice Age, during which Europe and North America were subjected to bitterly cold winters. A causal connection between low sunspot activity and cold winters has recently been made using data from the NASA's Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment which shows that solar UV output is more variable over the course of the solar cycle than scientists had previously thought.
