"What we're speaking to is part of a larger, institutionalized culture on campus,
Which apparently - somewhat surprisingly, I might add - still insists on proper spelling and grammar. The question is how did these people get admitted in the first place to a university consistently ranked among the top 20 in the world.

"These are graduate students which, at least when I was one, implies a level of competence and ability above that of a random undergraduate."
Or a sixth-grader.

"2+2=4 THAT'S RACIST!!!"
Not to mention a tool of those in power to perpetuate the power structure and privileges of a European-centered patriarchy.

Some truly enlightening stuff in this article!
I also got a kick out of some of the “related” articles listed at the bottom of this one:

Maybe “Kenjus” is getting his PhD in ebonics-hence the poor grammar!

The soft bigotry of low expectations
IMO, this does more actual harm than HARD bigotry ever did. Under hard bigotry, people still had faith in themselves.

A question to which you and everyone else knows the answer.

Are you referring to “Four years ago I couldn’t even spell engineer. Now I are one.” Perhaps?

"Those of us in the Engineering graduate school had a number of uncomplimentary (and accurate) observations regarding the academic prowess of Ed majors." Well, speaking only for myself, I would be willing to pit my IQ against most any engineering grad any day of the week.

Back in the day when there was segregated schools, black teachers and parents expected excellence.
Now these drama queens call that racism.
The men & women who opened the first black college institutions are rolling in their graves at this.

Same here...I spend a good part of the day working around their hardware/firmware mistakes. They think, like doctors, that possessing certain degrees automatically makes one “smart”. I went to high school with a few guys who became doctors, and they told me that the degree took about 10% intelligence and 90% hard work, study and sweat - that is, it is absolutely possible to become a doctor without being smart. It is absolutely impossible to become a doctor without working hard.
