Is this real? I've always taken comfort in the assumption that our Armed Forces were ultimately and inherently Conservative, but is this really the case?

You forget who is talking. The Delusionists. They think anything they say is true or going to come true just by saying it whether reality smacks them in the face or not.

“In 2005, a total of 50 percent of respondents described themselves as “conservative” or “very conservative.” The next year that number fell to 44 percent. And in 2012 it hit 42.72 percent, making it slightly more popular than the next most popular group, “moderate,” at 41.54 percent.”

Next largest was “independent” at 27%.

I was in the Navy and live in a strong Navy town. The people who make the screws turn and guns fire are predominantly conservative with a very dim view of leftist ideas. I don’t know what the average 19 year old deck div striker thinks, but they probably start out as young lefties until their Chief shows them the value of a hard day’s work.

The officers who want to be career officers are beginning to lean left, as their Admirals tell them to be.

I have the feeling that the real patriots are either leaving the service voluntarily or being purged from it, and are being replaced by homosexuals and their sympathizers, and others who support either a progressive agenda or out-and-out statism.

I am former military and most of my neighbors are on active duty. Most people in the military are still very conservative. This administration may have politicized some of the senior leadership, but most enlisted and officers are still conservative. Liberals want to transform the military. The homosexual policy is one way for them to do that. However, for the time being, the military remains mostly conservative. Most liberals are not inclined to serve in the military and conservatives are naturally attracted to it.

Ronin, allow me to share with you (at the risk of being flamed off FreeRepublic again) an essay I wrote:

==========================================

Many of you have claimed, stated, and otherwise mentioned the notion that there are so-called "oathkeepers" in the ranks of the military, who will eventually "wake up", and throw off the shackles of the regime, and America and the Constitution will be restored complete with rainbow skies, chocolate rivers and children playing with gumdrop smiles.

Every One Of You Is Sadly And Foolishly Optimistic.

And I shall tell you why...

Your military has been "fundamentally transformed" into something that did not exist two generations ago. The service of that age saw its ranks filled with patriotic Americans who understood the death struggle with Soviet Russia and its minions across the globe. We had leadership possessed of resolve and purpose. Our men and women in uniform had superior training and spirit, and were focused on the mission of securing freedom.

Now, look at today. The service has been emasculated on the battlefield, with rules of engagement which essentially prevent the soldier from engaging the enemy; in the garrison, with emphasis on promoting perversion in the ranks and social experimentation; and over all, a command structure determined to destroy the fighting spirit and will to resist.

The military and the government minions who comprise this regime are loyal to their oaths, indeed. They swore to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic - and those enemies have been redefined as YOU. And they will prosecute this war against you, the new domestic enemies, to the fullest extent of the law and the uttermost end of strength.

This contemporary military no longer has patriotic warriors in their hierarchy. Those whom we would call "patriots" have either retired, been forced out, or otherwise purged from the ranks. The current generation of soldier - from the lowliest sailor manning the rails to the loftiest flag-rank officer spouting regime talking points - are there for myriad reasons, which include college tuition and education benefits; they reenlist to qualify for cash bonuses; they receive taxpayer-funded salaries, tax-exempt and duty-free goods and services, and taxpayer-funded health care; and when they reach retirement, they then receive taxpayer-funded pensions, further health care, and in the case of the higher ranks, their dachas by the lake, just as their Soviet counterparts did.

The current generation of military members are indeed mercenaries.They fight for pay and they fight well. They are committed to upholding the regime that funds their present and future lifestyle. And they are committed to collecting intelligence of the enemy they have been ordered to fight: the domestic terrorists, as defined by their chain of command.

Now, many of you will ask, "Sarge, how can you possibly say all these things?" Here's how: having spent 26 years in that uniform as an officer and as an NCO, seeing both sides of the conduct and training and corporate culture;

Having spent years as a recruiter, knowing all the training, benefits and bonuses (aka "entitlements") that a young mush-brain could be enticed with to enlist, and re-enlist over and again;

Having watched comrades with whom I served, bled, dined and drank with, evolve over time into apologists for the regime, fully supportive of the usurpers of the nation, and who will carry out each and every order against their own fellow citizens, to their uttermost conclusion;

Having beheld the current crop of leadership - MY generation, the ones who remember the "shining city on the hill" - utter pusillanimous words of aid and comfort to the enemies of freedom, both here and abroad.

Folks, do not deceive yourselves into believing all this "oathkeeper" talk. It's a lie, perpetrated to spread false hope. The true patriots of the military have left the service, either in disgust or dotage - or to live their golden years in their own dachas by the lake.

If there is any hope for the America of our memory, it lies in the unorganized militia.

I’ve nevermet a liberal in uniform ever and I’ve met a lot of them. If she’s never worn a uniform I wouldn’t even waste my breath on her.

Not anymore. Most of the younger members were fine with the repeal of DADT. Most of the warfighter specialties tend to be the most conservative.

Liberals in uniform?
Liberals hate America and hate the military. That even 10% of service members might describe themselves as Libs is ridiculous, let alone a majority.

I’m told how accepting the general public is of Socialism these days yet the Left is always reluctant to use that word. They had no problem calling Bush a “Fascist” but cannot own up to their own Marxist ideologies.

They know that the word is still anathema to the American public.

There are a fair number of liberals in the younger caucasian group, and a lot in the minorities.

The command structure looks at any oath keeper reference extremely negatively.

I saw a picture once of Bill Clinton in uniform. His branch of service tape said “Governor”.

She is wrong.

When I was in the Marine Corps I learned the truest definition of 'courage'. And this is it - "Courage is not the elimination of fear, it's the realization that there is something more important.".

This is why the left so loathes the military. The left projects, and sees every situation in how it effects them, while the right empathizes. They are incapable of understanding self sacrifice. That is why your debater is wrong.

...if there really were more liberals in the military, the left would be doing everything in its power to get soldiers to vote.

Instead, the left is constantly disenfranchising the military.

There is purging, and squashing, and changing. And further, a notable portions of military conservative vote for democrats. That said, hundreds may be being purged, and thousands dissuaded, there are over a million in uniform.

When I retired from the Navy 10 years ago it was very conservative. Now when I go on the local Army base I am suprised at the number of obama stickers I see on cars.

Our Armed Forces culture was created to be nonpolitical. That in itself is a conservative principle. And it has been reinforced in the Armed Forces for a long time.

However, the evil that is called liberalism (one of its many guises) abhors this. It has been doing everything it can to politicize our Armed Forces for a long time. The purges are part of this. Should liberalism succeed in politicizing our Armed Forces’ leadership then the Republic is finished.

Always remember, liberals want raw power. They are totalitarians no different than Nazis, Communists, and Dictators. They have lusted after control of both our Armed Forces and Police Forces. So far they have failed to turn either. So they have been subverting federal law enforcement agencies and trying to build their own armed forces (Brownshirts). And while doing so they continue to try to at least neuter our Armed Forces.

Are our Armed Forces liberal? Not yet. But the enemy within keeps trying.

As confirmed above, most people in the military are conservative.

However, for anyone serving who also has some aspects of sociopathology (power hunger or outright criminal mindedness), there is a strong temptation to come out of the military and run for office.

General rule: military background + running for office as a democrat = good chance to get ahead on the backs of your constituents.

This has been demonstrated time and again in Congress.
