I just have to say “thanks” for passing this along. What a time capsule this is! Cinnamon Girl on piano is just a treat, and the whole collection is quite remarkable.

Neil is an odd duck. At one point he supported Ronald Reagan.

Early on he supported Bush in the war on terrorism. Then he flipped on that. Guess he's not alone in that respect.

I have been listening to his latest album with Crazy Horse called “Psychedelic” which is a bit of a return to the sixties in some ways. The first song “Driftin Back” is like 26 minutes long. The best song on the record, in my opinion, is “Ramada Inn”, which is like 13 minutes long. It is a great record.

I'm sure David Crosby gave him an earful after that.

Even before I knew his politics I could not stand to listen to his nasal voice.

I’m jealous! Good stuff.

Loved “After the Gold Rush” and early CSN&Y.

You couldn’t pay to see him now.

You probably can’t guess my age, can you? ;-)

I would suspect you are probably under 30, since most gen y would consider Neil Young a fossil. It would be surprising for any one of that group to be familiar with 70s music, hence your question to me regarding your age.The fact that you are a Freeper at a young age encourages me as well.

As a fan of old school Neil Young, thank you for the post.

There was a time when the words of popular musicians were actually listened too.

“Sailing heart-ships
thru broken harbors
Out on the waves in the night
Still the searcher
must ride the dark horse
Racing alone in his fright.
Tell me why, tell me why”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynlW5_rnRVE

“Old man lying
by the side of the road
With the lorries rolling by,
Blue moon sinking
from the weight of the load
And the buildings scrape the sky,
Cold wind ripping
down the alley at dawn
And the morning paper flies,
Dead man lying
by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7letrMf_nE

“Well, I dreamed I saw the knights
In armor coming,
Saying something about a queen.
There were peasants singing and
Drummers drumming
And the archer split the tree.
There was a fanfare blowing
To the sun
That was floating on the breeze.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1e3m_T-NMOs

“Think I’ll pack it in
and buy a pick-up
Take it down to L.A.
Find a place to call my own
and try to fix up.
Start a brand new day.”

Thanks much, FRiend! That is sound logic (pun intended).

But I was there in the 70s. I figured my post revealed that.

In fact, I've been humming "Cowgirl in the Sand" all night long as a result of this post.

BTW, I made a point to educate my youngest (now 23) about all the 60's, 70's. and 80's music. He can name that tune. It was my excuse to purchase all the CDs, now ripped. ;-)

I always liked a song he did called “Thrashers” on the Rust Never Sleeps album. It was on the acoustic side.

I don't know about his show but..

". . . euphonious. Perhaps the strangest member of [that] category, the purely harmonious, is the otherwise ordinary phrase cellar door. The claim that cellar door is beautiful to the ear — in opposition to its prosaic meaning — has been made by and attributed to a wide variety of writers over the years. “Poetry, in fact, is two quite distinct things,” H. L. Mencken wrote in a 1920 magazine column. “It may be either or both. One is a series of words that are intrinsically musical, in clang-tint and rhythm, as the single word cellar-door is musical . . .”

It’s only my gut feeling but I sincerely doubt that Neil Young gives a fat rat’s patoot what David Crosby thinks about anything other than a musical arrangement. :)

Thanks for the tip.

Funny, but I have few of Neil's official releases, but I have several concert bootlegs. One is from a performance with the Horse in Las Vegas at the Hard Rock which a friend and I attended. It was standing room only — no seats except in the balcony area, and my friend and I managed to push our way into the first row right in front of Neil. This might have something to do with why I'm nearly deaf today. :)

Anyway, the bootleg of that show is of exceptional quality. In fact, I'd venture to say it's better than his official live releases.

I like his music but must agree with Lynard Skynard about “needing Neil around, anyhow.”

A hit on Neil about his “Southern Man” screed in “Sweet Home Alabama”.

My recollection was that he wrote it right after the attacks. But according to this...not so. I also seem to remember Imus playing it often, with several more ring-tones as a lead in, reminiscent of those that emanated from The Pile.

Fortunately, my favorite band, Grateful Dead, refrained from espousing views.

Uncle John's Band playing in the background as I read this.

I used to play coffeehouses back in the 70s and included a section in the show called "You Can Write a Neil Young Song!".

I asked the audience for three letters between A and G. Then, I asked them for a few random words.

Employing a typical Neil Young flat-picking style with lots of hammer-ons, I would play those three chords and make up a meaningless song using the random words and singing in a weird falsetto.

It always got big laughs because Neil Young is a joke.
