The task force was hit by a kamikaze attack shortly after the picture was taken. On January 5, Louisville was struck on the number two turret, but only suffered minor damage. The next afternoon, however, another kamikaze hit her on the bridge, mortally wounding Rear Admiral Thomas Chandler, the commanding officer of CRUDIV4 (Cruiser Division 4).
