Northeast residents are bracing for a cold welcome to 2014 due to a winter storm predicted to bring snow and frigid temperatures across much of the region.
Though snow began falling overnight in parts of New England and New York, forecasters say the full storm would not hit until later Thursday.
As much as a foot of snow or more was forecast for some areas overnight Thursday into Friday, and temperatures were expected to plummet, with some areas seeing highs just above zero, the National Weather Service said.
"There will be travel problems," said Hugh Johnson, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Albany, N.Y. "It will be very cold."

Sections of interior southern New England and New York could get up to a foot of snow, with forecasts generally calling for 6 to 12 inches. New York City, likely to see 3 to 7 inches, issued a snow alert. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged the city's commuters to leave their cars at home in case major highways are closed for Thursday's evening rush hour. "The saying it's too cold to snow, won't apply Thursday night and early Friday. Temperatures for much of this storm will be in the single numbers and this will create a snow that is as light as you will ever see in this part of the world. You should be able to actually use a push broom to move the snow if you would like."
- David Epstein, a meteorologist in Maine

Thanks for the reminder! 7:30 C on ESPN I hope Brent Musburger is not an announcer! To much of a drama queen for me.
Can’t blame them, once the wind begins to blow, we will be talking white out conditions.
Didn't he have the most awesome voice.
Was suppose to start teaching a network security class tonight, but the school is closed.
This teacher is glad cause I wasn’t really all that ready to go tonight. Will spend my time getting ready for next Thursday. LOL
Michigan here: Went to Wayne County from, well...south of Wayne County. (left around 10:30 am) It took us twice as long as normal, mostly 30-45 mph on the expressway. Very, very slippery.
About as long to come home, worse coming home really, as there was “rush” hour traffic. My husband has numb hands and white knuckles. Roads are getting nicely polished by wind, too.
Glad to be home. Looks like two inches of snow fell since we left.
Central NH report: -2F wind NE 10-15 wind chill -17F barometer 30.14 falling, heavy snow.
Wait how is this even possible, when Al Gore wrote in the New York Times 8 years ago that snowy winters in the Northeast were a thing of the past due to climate change?
Any weather is proof Liar Gore was right all along. Do you doubt it? Just ask Liar Gore.
When I got the call that school was cancelled, they also mentioned that the governor had declared a state of emergence. Not sure when it suppose to go into affect.
It’s a snowstorm. No big deal. I’ve had to use the snowblower on the driveway twice today so far. That’s a fairly ordinary snowstorm in upstate New York.
Is the news media making this sound like the end of the world? Honestly, those people have a case.
My asshat governor has declared a state of emergency when the snow has just started within the past hour. He has threatened to close the LIE and I-87 (two major arteries in the southern part of NY). This little fascist dictator makes me sick. The asshat governor of Connecticut dismissed state employees early today-before the snow even started. What has happened to us? The media manipulates us into a frenzy for 8” of snow! When I was a kid, we dealt with two feet of snow and managed. We have become a nation of wimps with wimpy leaders.
They closed schools today at 10:30 in the morning. The snow had not even started yet! How did we ever fight a revolutionary war, a depression and two world wars? We would not be able to do that today.
Eh.
I think its pretty ridiculous myself -- these fat huffing guys shuffling down their driveways with $500 snowblowers to remove 3-4 inches of light fluffy snow. Having completed this Herculean task, they sit back and pat themselves on the back for toughing it out in this "tough Nooh England weathah."
Oh, a wise guy, eh?
Its bad but could be worse. They say Winnipeg has a wind chill of -54 F. That is colder then it is on Mars.
Just started snowing about 2 hours ago here in NE PA. Small, fine snow that’s usually a harbinger of several inches.
Got the kerosene stove and the electric oil-filled heaters to “spot heat” and only running the whole house system a couple times a day to keep the pipes from freezing.

Love that video. A classic.
Went to get a few groceries and while my back was turned the line grew by about 100 people. Don’t you hate when that happens? Little flakes dancing around, started while I was on my way home, about an hour ago. NYC
Wow, because of this thread I just looked out the window - roads, car, covered with less than half an inch.
This was to my (and hubby’s) complete surprise. We got back from “emergency” grocery shopping about 2 hours ago, and there was nothing, not even light precipitation.
We are stocked up and ready to stay en la casa until Saturday AM with no problemo.
Jersey Bayshore, about 10 miles north of Sandy Hook.
Looks like you folks are in for about 8 inches of snow. I don’t mind the snow it is the wind that bothers me. Hope my car is not under a drift tomorrow morning.
