There's a big difference between cheap vodka and filtered vodka, both the flavor and the next day aftereffects. Least expensive “clean” filtered vodkas would be Absolut, Pinnacle, Svedka, maybe Sky. Not going to be nearly as smooth as Grey Goose, Belvidere or more expensive boutique vodkas, but passable. There's one from Texas, I forget the name but it's distilled in Austin, that is a comparative bargain among the better vodkas, too. Scotch just about has to be single malt, very few blends that are decent, maybe Pinch. An affordable decent single malts is Glenlivet or Glenfiddich and it goes up from there.

“Does filtering cheap vodka through a Brita filter really work?”

As a non-Vodka or any Liquor drinker, I have always wondered about a vodka I read about in one of those local "Town & Country" clones, you know, the ones aimed at the "I have too much money" crowd. It was for "Diaka Vodka" whose claim to fame was being diamond filtered(?) and thus a premium Polish Vodka. Yes, diamonds are pure carbon, but used for filtering?!?

Sounds to ignorant me like marketing hype to the max!

The name of the Texas vodka wouldn’t be Tito’s, would it?

The cleanest vodka available is New Amsterdam. It is also the cheapest. The other are not even close. New Amsterdam has 0 impurities and 0 additives except for purified water to cut it to 80 proof. Virtually all other vodkas have some type of flavor or anti-flavor additives to cut the burn and any undesired flavors or smells. In my neck of the woods you can find it for as low as $11.99 a fifth. The taste and the smell are the cleanest you will ever experience.

The vodka you are talking about from Texas is Tito's. Filtered 6 times. Skyy is filtered 5 times. Vodka has to be filtered at least 3 times thru activated charcoal to clean up the cogeners. Everybodies preferences are different depending on the taste and source ( water/wheat/corn etc.

A single malt should be aged 10yrs in a cask minimum to be labeled as such. After that the price goes up exponentially as approximately 2% is lost per year, the angels share. So you pay for the distilleries time in cask
