Houston Astrodome came before NOLA's Superdome. Not that a super bowl was ever played in the Astrodome (none was, according to
wiki:List_of_Super_Bowl_games). Same source has many super bowl games played outdoors.

that is weird to me because I remember my father telling me it was always played in the newest stadium. I guess at some point that ceased to be true, but I’m still surprised there was never one played there.

True, but also not a cold weather venue. I don’t know why they didn’t put a roof, or maybe a retractable roof, on the new Giants/Jets stadium.
