Do you have cable, wireless, or satellite internet connection?

Amen. I went without TV for the last three years, and have loved every quiet minute of it. Rediscovered the joys of radio. Blood pressure is down, no more screaming heads, mindless shows, commercials, talentless vapid bimbos, or incessant political blather.

They are the worst, most completely confused and confusing company I have ever dealt with.

Hubby is always switching around providers, but I told him NEVER AGAIN with Dish.

Here is another prime example of their stupidity.

“[Direct TV has] better customer support in my experience.”

Almost everyone I’ve ever dealt with there has been very good. I even had one gal convince me to go with auto-pay (I never do stuff like that), she was just charming and I was sure she was going to go very far, very fast.

Take those 60 days and investigate Roku and other Internet ‘tv.’ You’ll save tons of cable money and you will never go back. It’s just a matter of time until the cable companies disappear.

They are union, and I believe that is some of the problem. We are SO glad to have cut loose of our cable.

They usually have some form of sign-on bonus; 3 months of premium channels, generally.
We’ve had DirecTV for nine years, here on the farm, and it’s been OK. Can’t get TW out here, and no high speed internet, so Netflix is out of the question.

“Are there any channels/shows you just gotta have?”

My “trained” reply to this used to be “baseball”. However, I thought long and hard about it :-).

I spent my youth/young adult years listening to baseball on the radio while doing other things. I’d rarely watch a game on TV. Why I used this as an excuse to keep cable TV is beyond me. I know all about mlb.tv, but you cannot (legally) get home games using that service.

At any rate, no more cable at my house :-). You’d be amazed at other stuff you can do while not sitting in front of the idiot box :-). Amazon Prime, Netflix, and OTA TV takes care of those spells where I need to watch something. If I need to see a game on TV, I either head to a bar or attend the game live.

Finally, if the reversal of net neutrality raises prices or kills off any online services I use, then I’ll simply not watch as much TV :-). It’s highway robbery what people are charged vs. what they watch on cable TV. I will not go back.

My son uses computer to put it on big tv screen. You can still get TV shows and other stuff....

About the only way I see any TV is on my Logitech Revue. With that I get Google TV, NetFlix, Top Documentary Films.com, and other stuff. But no cable and the Revue only runs off a 12v adapter and that reeds a Toshiba LED TV which s pretty miserly power wise too. I do not even need to have the computer running, just my Switch/Router that takes nothing to run power wise.

And you know what? There is always too much to watch! No cable and too much to watch. With the Revue I also can see Crackle, You Tube, and tons of other free Internet TV. Most great TV series are on Net Flix (a year later) and they have their own shows also. The discontinued the Revue (stupid) but Roku and many DVD players have Netflix and other stuff built in. I see Wing Dead, Lilyhammer, Supernatural, Lie to Me, Breaking Bad, etc and like I said most other TV serials, but often a year later than current. Also Fox news and Fox news business and most of that is relatively current. Oh and I think you can watch CNBC and MSNBC free if you are drawn to those soaps.

Again, I see tons of shows and films and still have my DVD player, and view the free DVD's from places like the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Just go online and get some terrific stuff from there for free. So if you want to cut the Cable and Satellite cord it is very doable. And like I said there really is more to see than your viewing hours probably allow.

Sorry, it does not get Lifetime so that may put a crimp in your entertainment,~~~~~ or not.

Not as bad as Progressive Insurance cancelling you without notifying you.

There is HughesNet, that is a satellite internet service. High speed internet that downloads through your satellite dish.

I believe DirectTV as well as Dish have their own also.

Suspended my DirecTV service for 6 months. I get all my movies from the net...and news...and weather... $109 for DirecTV vs. $46 for the HS internet.

Oh, and using an OBI box and Google Voice I have *free phone* too with long distance, voice mail and voice transcription etc! All you need is the Internet and do not need cable or Satellite. Cut the phone, satellite, and cable and miss nothing. The extras you will need is the OBI box (Obi 100 on Amazon or New Egg for less than $39 one time and a Roku other entertainment device and buy the refurbs as those can usually be found for less than $50 one time).

But no more cable or phone bills EVER.

I don't have cable in my area and I wouldn't have cable TV if it were free. I like Direct instead.

I've owned satellite receivers since the 10 ft C-Band dish and before Dishnet or Direct. The laws may have changed but I think the problem is you made the mistake of allowing Cable to be contracted to your home. It used to be and still may be a law or contracted loophole for cable companies {either local or federal or a contract no competition clause a local government signed} that you could not have satellite TV service if cable was active in your home in the past 60 or 90 days. I say this because when I'd switched satellite companies the first thing asked was have you had cable TV in the past 90 days I think it was.

Go with Dish Network. Cheaper, better equipment.

I have been without outside TV for over 6 years. Kill the TV, stop supporting the lefty agenda through cable and satellite payments.

I pay for my mother-in-law’s satellite. Was using DirecTV until I tried to upgrade it all to HD. They wouldn’t come out for over 30 days so I cancelled and called DishTV.

DishTV came out the next day and installed it all in two hours. DirecTV then spent two weeks asking me “why did you leave”? Finally told them that if they were as active with customer service as they were asking why I cancelled then I’d still be a customer. I think they all were scratching their heads.

I’m surprised you have to wait 60 days. Maybe they had a run of scams of Cancel/Reup and were losing equipment or something. Just a guess.

Seems silly they wouldn’t jump at the chance to get a customer back though.

You can cut all the cables if you have the Internet.
See post #49 and #53.
I have had NO phone or cable bill for nearly 3 years now... but still have phone and cable type service. For a while I was running that just on a DSL connection that was VERY cheap but still got phone, cable, etc just fine. Cost to get in was about $80 total about 3 years ago and not looking back now.
