Bumetanide, a diuretic approved to treat people with liver and heart disease, is currently being tested on mice and rats to prove its effectiveness in reversing and alleviating the effects of autism in people.

This is an odd one. Chloride is an essential electrolyte in the body. In physiology, the primary ions of electrolytes are sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride (Cl−), hydrogen phosphate (HPO42−), and hydrogen carbonate (HCO3−).

The article says that autistic children have too much chloride and this may be the cause or a contributing factor to autism.

But it’s not clear from the article whether this should be given to pregnant women to prevent autism, or whether it’s effective when given the children who already have autism.

Obviously more info is needed, but this is an interesting approach.

Chemistry and drug testing (even if it is detailed in description) is not my forte. However, I am very glad that some research and hopefully new drugs could alleviate or “cure” Autism. My friend has two Asperger kids. I have seen their struggles and to be quite honest.. the parents struggle. I pray that one day they can cure it.

Given that autism afflicts the affluent more than the poor and:

1. academia and the medical profession have been on a 20+ year war on fat and

2. the affluent and extreme parents are more likely to heed the advice of the “experts” and

3. the brain is composed almost exclusively of cholesterol and

4. according to Adelle Davis, children require about 30% of their calories from fats and

4. autism has been identified as a problem of the brain

It blows me away that no one has made any effort to investigate a possible link between low-fat diets of children and pregnant mothers and autism.

Of course, this is just supposition, but that's because no one has done any research on it.

For anyone who considers this a possibility, and since the “experts” have yet to determine what causes autism, never, ever, ever give pregnant women, babies or children reduced fat, low-fat or skim milk. Whole milk only for those who can drink it.

Agreed. While this new drug might alleviate symptoms, it’s still not going to the root cause. We used to hardly ever see this problem but like everything else, there is an autistic child in nearly every extended family group these days. There is something in society today that is causing more and more of this be it autism or peanut allergies or ADHD, etc. It’s not just that doctors are more aware of it, it is because there are larger and larger portions of people who have it.

The shocking thing, from my point of view, is that chloride is such an essential chemical. The human metabolism is very oriented to having balanced electrolytes.

Amniotic fluid at first is mainly water with electrolytes, but by about the 12-14th week the liquid also contains proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and phospholipids, and urea, all of which aid in the growth of the fetus. The fetus is breathing this fluid. So for a condition to arise like this is truly odd.
