Learn how to garden. Consider potatoes, one of the best sources of both calories and nutrition (be sure to eat the skin too).
In the days of communism, the Russians encouraged their people to grow potatoes on the little plots of land the commissars gave their higher ranking worker bees. Supposedly potatoes gave more calories and nutrition than anything else that could be grown in that amount of land.
So... We tried growing potatoes last year and failed miserably. We DID get some potatoes, but not nearly as many as we should have.
We’ll try again this year and hopefully do better.
Moral of this story: Learn now, when you can afford to make mistakes. It ain’t as easy as it looks...

Different topic: Everyone wants to know WHEN the SHTF will start. None of us knows, but I personally believe time is short.
One reason is that Obama is at risk of losing control of the Senate, and many of the new guys will not be the spineless weaklings we call “Republicans” now. Obama can not tolerate opposition, and will not tolerate losing power.
Obama has laid the foundation for social chaos, and could trigger it at will. He has also built the domestic army he needs to impose marital law in response. This could even keep him in power indefinitely, but would need to be done before he loses control of Congress.
Yes, I think he would stoop that low. In fact I’m SURE he would if he felt he could pull it off.
If he decides to make a move like that he will need to do it relatively soon. No later than this summer.
I do not know if he will actually do this, but I think it prudent to set a goal of being “ready” no later than July.

Did some research on calories per acre. Turns out there are all sorts of confounding factors that make it difficult to make comparisons.
For instance, potatoes are listed at 18M calories per acre, rice at 8M. But then in some places you can get three crops of rice per year, making the land produce 24M calories per acre per year.
Also I discovered that the calories per acre reported for crops varies wildly from one source to another.
I've had to break into my small preps and thank goodness they were there to get us through an unexpected budget bump. I've been to the grocery store once in four months and that was at the beginning of Feb for things like milk, lettuce, butter, and eggs. It's something when the oblivious family notices bare shelves in the pantry and freezer.
Adding that I agree and am very nervous if I can get the food preps back up in time. On a very tight budget (and getting tighter by the day with his min wage bs), but the need to hustle quickly, my target is June which sadly lines up with your date. I started a lot of seeds to get a jump on the garden but with the a/c heater system deciding to go into death throes, they haven’t done well in this cold house so much will have to be restarted outside later. Those who bought into the idea of throwing out a packet of prepper seeds expecting to feed the entire neighborhood the next week will have a very rude awakening.
I fully expect hussein to pull something at any moment so a good day is any day he hasn’t. Our GOP isn’t going to bat an eye when it happens as they’ve plotted and planned right along with him.
