A treaty signed in 1994 by the US and Britain could pull both countries into a war to protect Ukraine if Putin's troops intervene.

The Budapest Memorandum was signed by Bill Clinton, John Major, Boris Yeltsin and Leonid Kuchma – the then-rulers of the USA, UK, Russia and Ukraine - as part of the denuclearization of former Soviet republics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union

Technically it means that if Russia has invaded Ukraine then it would be difficult for the US and Britain to avoid going to war.

...

the [Budapest] Memorandum is legally binding.'

It promises to protect Ukraine's borders, in return for Ukraine giving up its nuclear weapons.

Today Kiev has demanded the agreement is activated after insisting their borders had been violated.

Putin unlike the Brits declaring over a mere “scrape of paper” in August 1914 when Germany violated Belgian neutrality and the Treaty of London knows Obama will stomp and pout and do nada.

Now all we need is an assasinated Archduke and it’s party time.

Obama would ignore this treaty.... I think he would only intervene if it benefited him somehow.

I, uh, really don’t think we need to worry about Obama obeying any stupid old treaty.

Like every other law he doesn’t like, Obama will choose not to enforce it.

The US and Great Britain are not going to die for Crimea.

And NATO is not going start a world war over it.

Not really a treaty.

Get the Sink Emperor back in here to explain that — it all depends on what the meaning of “memorandum” is.

Obozo kind’ makes it up as he goes along. If he decides to say “Treaty? What treaty”? then that’s that.

The treaty was an exchange of nukes for guarantees. I hope crafty Ukrainians stashed away a few - they could be very handy in today’s situation. Who would miss Moscow, for example?

I thought the United Nations was supposed to take care of this sort of thing.

This is not a "treaty"; it was never ratified by the Senate; it has no legal force. It was a diplomatic memorandum, which expressed the views of the governments then in power of the four signing countries, but is in no way binding on the United States (or anyone).

I wish. No the Ukrainians are again about to prove what a dangerous ally the US can be.

Not a treaty which makes us an ally of the Ukraine.

All these countries are members of the UN. Why are we getting nothing from the UN.

Was this an actual legally-binding treaty passed by 2/3rds of the Senate, or was it merely an executive agreement signed by the President. If the latter, it is not truly legally binding on the US.
