"My boss...grabbed his jacket and began screaming and yelling, 'Did you pay for this? Did you pay for this?' And I lied for him, I said, 'Yes,'" she said

Shame on her for lying. The initial intent is well founded, IMO.

When first contacted for comment, Lins’ boss Romany Youseff told NewsCenter 5 he couldn’t let employees get away with stealing.

“Romany Youseff” Hmmmmm.....

Interesting indeed...

I think any retail chain would have fired her. I worked in retail when I was young. Everybody knew that failure to record a sale, giving merchandise away, or taking inventory home is grounds for immediate dismissal. Even the labor union would not defend you. I knew a guy who took a plastic comb off of the shelf and put it in his pocket. The union shop steward saw the theft and turned the kid in. The kid was fired and his job went to somebody else who joined the union. The unions know that employee theft causes job losses.

I’m going to take the unpopular side here and say I agree with management. When this “homeless guy” gets back to his buddies with his cup o’ joe, he’ll tell them where he got it and that 7-11 would be swamped with hobos within hours. Many won’t “ask” for handouts, they’ll just take them.

Giving free stuff to bums is the most sure-fire way to find yourself surrounded by more bums.

She should’ve paid for it. It wasn’t hers to give away. The boss overreacted, perhaps, but that doesn’t change the fact she stole. If it was only a dollar, why couldn’t she pay for it? It’s the principle of the thing in any case.

I’m with the boss on this. He may have overreacted, but it’s his coffee the employee is giving away. If the employee wanted to do a good deed and feel good about herself, she should have put $1 from her own pocket into the till for the coffee. It’s not so noble to give away stuff that isn’t yours.

Is it her job to give away things that do not belong to her?

She could have put the dollar in herself instead of giving away the company’s coffee, which I seriously doubt she had the right to do.

Then it would have been paid for and not a problem.

She was “kind” to him, using OTHER PEOPLE’S property. Nice.

Her heart is in the right place. She should have bought it for the poor soul. Too many people think it’s fine to be generous as long as they are using another persons money. It gives them a good feeling with no real investment. They are called democrats.

You are ALL missing the most important point here!

Were the coffee grounds from that FREE cup of coffee properly recycled into the compost pile?

She should have paid for it but the article says the boss walked in in the middle of it.

For me, if I was the owner I’d have said nothing. I’ve had things like that happen. If it isn’t abused, her reaction was human, and I’d have been proud of her. Obviously it can’t happen all the time or you’ve got a problem. But there is no indication here that it happens all the time.

Lying and stealing from the boss is going to get you fired every time. Lesson learned.

Not a lot of Christian charity on this site tonight.

“Looked like the man was freezing”. I think he needed something warm to drink.

Boss shouldn’t have grabbed the man. That’s assault and battery.

He should have allowed the clerk to pay for it and then said, it was nice but please don’t do it that way again.

Come on folks. We’ve had some pretty damned cold and wet weather these last few weeks. Time to cut everyone a little slack.

I think her heart was in the right place, just not her brain.

I had a friend way back when who was a bit of a bum, in and out of work, and very left-wing. One of his prior jobs was bicycle mechanic, and he was quite good at it. He got fired though, for “over-delivery” of service. When people would bring their bikes in, they’d pay for a particular repair, and he’d just go ahead and fix everything that was wrong with it. He thought it was so unfair that they fired him for “doing the right thing.” He just didn’t get it when I tried to explain that he was giving away his boss’s money.

If she hadn’t lied it probably wouldn’t have amounted to more than a “OK, but I don’t want those bums encouraged, don’t do it any more.”

Since she lied for such a trivial matter, and the boss had to unpeel the truth out of her, I can see him feeling uncomfortable with her sticking around.

It sounds like she is a little weaselly.

She stole a cup of coffee.

She gave it away.

She lied about it.

That’s wrong.

(If I were the boss I would have paid for the coffee and fussed at her. The first time.)

You give homeless men free coffee you start attracting homeless men to the business and repelling paying customers. It isn’t charity when you give away someone else’s resources and depress his income.

Everyone is missing the real issue here. That cup of coffee is not $1.00 It is $1.06 with the Ma. sales tax included. This so called “ good person” took that $ right out of Deval’s ( Gov. and friend of Obama) pocket. He is in the middle of a $9 million rehab of his office and needs every penny he can collect.
