Okay...so he is in area cover with trees, so much so the choppers could not see him, yet the best he could find to eat was flies.

Mmmmmmmm makes me wonder...

(From "Dracula", a Gothic horror story - Bram Stoker, 1897):

Renfield is an inmate of a lunatic asylum. He suffers from delusions which compel him to eat living creatures in the hope of obtaining their life-forces for himself.

He starts by consuming flies, then feeds the flies to spiders, then feeds the spiders to birds, then wants to feed the birds to a cat (where he strikes out, no cats in the asylum, so no fliespiderscatbird pot-pie for Renfield)....all of this in order to accumulate more and more life-force.

Later he is revealed to be under the long-distance telepathic influence of Count Dracula, the lord of bats, rats....and the Lord of the Flies.

Bon appetit, ladies and gentlemen.

Leni

I’ll be here all week, please don’t forget to tip the waitresses.

Police Inspector Mark Henderson says Mr Dudzisz had become lost and was stranded in the bush between two flooded sections of the Barcoo River for about 10 days.

You don't starve to death in 10 days. I went 4 days without food on a NOLS course while backpacking 50 miles over rugged Rocky Mountain backcountry and it taught that food is one of your least concerns in most survival situations lasting several days. Since he was stranded by floodwater, he had plenty of water to drink. Since he was in Queensland, Australia in late summer, he was in little danger of dying from exposure. His main risk would have been snakebite or crocs, but that is a danger down there if you are lost or not.

"He went directly to the shops, stocked up on some food, and then he went down to where he stayed when he was last here, which was a little picnic area in a park here and had his food that he bought."

Base camp.

Being an avid back packer myself and back packing in Australia I can say Australia is one of the most unforgiving places to get stranded.

Besides. Flies and Maggots make a good meal.
