IMHO, XP was, and is, still the best. Still have it on one of my putters.

Upgraded last year from XP to Win 8.
Once again, early adopters are screwed.

Maybe MS should offer an upgrade that wasn’t designed for a 15-year-old girl’s smart phone.

This just shows that Win 8 is so bad that people wouldn’t switch to it even if they get paid to. I don’t mind switching to Windows 7, but if you don’t buy a computer with a touch screen, Windows 8 is absolutely horrible.

Moving to Windows 8...not for $100. However, I did rebuild my old Windows XP desktop and moved to Windows 7. Windows 7 is a worthy successor Windows XP.

Desperation. I’ll hang onto my 10 year old HP tower running XP, even though it’s getting a little cranky.

Windows 7 runs better on an old PC than XP. I had to convert to get stuff to work

It would be nice to have a few of the old threads from the time XP came out.
As I recall, here on FR it was denounced over and over as being too expensive, hard to use, memory hog, another Microsoft boondoggle, and the main culprit of Global Warming.

I suspect the price of PCs/laptops/notebooks etc. will go up by just about as much. Funny how those things happen.

I have an old clunker that I might agree to turn in...for Windows 7.I'm avoiding W8 like the plague...just as I avoided ME and Vista.

Build your own and save much much more. It can be tricky for those who
are unknowledgeable about building a Puter, but there are tons of sites and
tens of thousands of techies out there to help.

This is a real touchy subject with me. I am using 7, but I have to keep an old XP machine around to run a few programs that don't work on 7.
Upgrade, sure if MS would recognize that some of us need to keep and access old files (some 20 years old) that are in programs that MS has abandoned. For example I have several hundred MS Works databases and spreadsheets. I occasionally need these files. I have converted some to PDF, but that takes time. Works databases can't be converted to anything useful. I'd run to 8 in a heartbeat if my old programs work.

I bought my laptop through my IT pros. They were able to configure thing to operate much like XP did. I don’t have the “tiles” on the screen and they later also helped me through the update to 8.1. I’d had the thing for over a year, but until XP was set to die, I stayed with the desktop. I also had to buy a wireless keyboard and mouse so I can use it the same way I did the old one.

That means any security flaws found by attackers after that point wont be patched, leaving users who are still clinging to their old computers open to attack. Only if XP is allowed access to the internet.
If not, it is a damned fine utility OS and will be around until all the lights go out. At least, that's how I'll use it.
With XP, I have purchased my last MS product.

What if you have a good firewall/anti-virus program like Kaspersky? Is XP still vulnerable to hackers?
