I’ve done that too, in a situation from which I walked away with only a few scratches when in fact I should have been killed instantly.

Something or someone intervened on my behalf that night. It wasn’t dumb luck, that I’m sure of.

He just left his motorcycle lying there... I mean wasn’t it obvious I was going to ride it if he did that? How did it wind up in the pond? Well, it seemed a better option than hitting that car.

The owner of the motorcyle was a member of the gardening staff at my school and was only about five years older than me. He pulled me out of the pond (actually more a small lake) in a stunned condition and made sure I was not injured - and then pounded me into the ground.

Almost knocked the garage down with me in it. It all started with some lye, some water, a glass jar, some aluminum foil and a really big balloon to collect the Hydrogen in.....

See, that was your mistake. When I was four, I introduced a polonium / arsenic mixture that I put on her meals, which killed her slowly over time.

When I was a lad of 11 years old, I discovered that I could turn the photosensor on the parking lot lights at the local Roman Catholic Church to face the light. The lamplight would fall on the sensor, and it would take the entire church lighting system down. Then the dark would cause it to light back up again. I had the thing strobing like the outside of a Nevada brothel. When I went to Mass one day, the priest mentioned this was happening, and got angrier and angrier, until he was jabbing his finger in the air at us and yelling “It’s a sin! It’s a sin!” LOL

Unfortunately, that was not an option. My bratty older sister snitched all my polonium, and it was not available to me.

I guess that was another life lesson I learned that day. Never trust your family members when there is polonium involved.

Oh what a great story. I suppose for a kid, the Japanese would be really bewildering. I was stationed at Yokota in my mid-20s and I saw all of that, except for the demonstrations at the gate. But I enjoyed their politeness on the street, eating at the one-price restaurants where you could grill your own food, the noisy pachinko machines, drunk men on the train, nodding off after midnight. I thought the plastic food in the window was genius!

I did go to Yokosuka one year for the open house at the base and the USS Independence was in port and open for tours to the locals. I don't know if there was any trouble at the gate or not. But I loved living over there.

Well we never got in trouble for this, but we filled a black sock with pea stones from a neighbor’s driveway, tied it to heavy fishing line, and pulled it across the street as cars were coming. This was in a small town on a low mph road, btw. It was fun watching cars swerve a bit and/or lock up the brakes. We never pulled it across if there were two cars.

Oh, and we took down a 30 MPH speed limit sign and, using black paint, made it read 80 MPH. Put it back up the same night, and it STAYED THAT WAY FOR OVER A YEAR before they fixed it.

So they had restaurants where you could grill your own meal? That’s a pretty cool concept. The least fun parts of cooking are the prep and the cleanup. This way it’s just the fun part, plus you know it’s cooked how you like it, and it’s probably less expensive since you supply some labor. Did they hand you a plate of ingredients and then you cooked it on sort of a community grill? Or did you have your own little grill at your table?

Yeah, it was the oil slick that got us in trouble. Funny how poor your judgement is when you’re a kid. Looking back it seems like we hesitated before we did it — so we had an inkling — but it was only a very brief hesitation.

I have to imagine that cardboard boxes are still being put to good use by kids. They have too much fun potential even with video games around.
