Western Australia has endured months of criticism over a shark-culling program intended to keep swimmers and surfers safe, but now a monstrous great white shark that was tagged and released is making headlines… and causing jaws to drop.

Basking shark?
Coloration is highly variable (and likely dependent on observation conditions and the individual's condition): commonly, the coloring is dark brown to black or blue dorsally, fading to a dull white ventrally.
On average, the adult basking shark reaches a length of 6–8 m (20–26 ft) and weighs about 5.2 t (5.1 long tons; 5.7 short tons).
