In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

meliorism \MEEL-yuh-riz-uhm, MEE-lee-uh- \ , noun
The doctrine that the world tends to become better or may be made better by human effort.

Example sentences:
For a life worthy to be lived is one that is full of active aspiration, for something higher and better; andsuch a contemplation of the world we call meliorism .
-- Paul Carus, Monism and Meliorism , 1885

The leaders rejected the soft meliorism of more secular activists, the idea that significant progresscould be made through consciousness-raising and education campaigns, through consensus andgradual reform.
-- David Brooks, "The Ideas Behind the March," The New York Times , 2013

Etymology:
Meliorism entered English in the late 1800s. It comes from the Latin word melior meaning "better."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

One could also credibly suppose, it’s a backhanded way of making an argument for himself, given his statements on the gun issue.

By why is it that only conservatives are expected to compromise?

When I worked with workers comp, I saw how unreasonable OSHA can be regulating big companies-they are as bad as the EPA-but that was not in the context of EMS or firefighters...

Because the calculus is to run the most ELECTABLE conservative, one that can win. The issue then becomes the interpretation of “electable”. Rick Santorum is not electable IMO. Plenty on FR will disagree with me but I don’t consider Palin electable either. She would be the unappeasables candidate, however. Which candidate would you like to see the GOPe compromise on? Ben Carson would not be approved by the unappeasables.

History disputes that theory though, because whenever we have run the most conservative candidate, they have won. It’s when we go with mushy moderates that we lose.

Which have won? Who is the true conservative that’s won? Nationally?

Eisenhower. Nixon. Reagan. Bush, when he followed Reagan’s lead.

But today’s unappeasables would never find those to be acceptable conservative candidates.

Reagan gave us amnesty. The unappeasables have already nixed Rubio for his immigration stance, though he might be otherwise conservative.

Ask the recently conservatively benighted Dr.Carson.....why he shouldn’t compromise on his anti-2ndAmend. stance to be more platable to those whom he presumes to speak for?

Conservatives are all in a thrall because he is intelligent,,kind, giving, and speaks thoughtfully, yet...somehow..because the song is palatable to the ears...well...we can be malleable on the palladium of all civil liberties.....
