A LGBTQ pride celebration at D.C.’s Woodrow Wilson High School led to a big surprise for students Wednesday, as Principal Pete Cahall came out as gay in front of the crowd.
Cahall tells WNEW’s Matt DelSignore that he just turned 50 and was “tired of hiding.”
“I would be a hypocrite if I tell kids to ‘be who you are’ and not be who I am,” he said.
He admits that he was nervous at the thought of sharing his secret in front of hundreds of students. Before his announcement, his hands were shaking, he said.
But students were very supportive, responding with cheers and applause. Senior Aidan Parisi, who helped to organize Pride Day event, says a lot of jaws dropped, including his.
But, Parisi said, “I was extremely proud of him for feeling comfortable to come out.”
The notoriously anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church is planning a demonstration at the school on Monday. The group’s website says it’s precisely because the school boasted that it would be the first public high school in the city, and maybe even the country, to host an LGBTQ pride event.
Wilson students are planning a counter-rally. Westboro Baptist Church is also planning several other demonstrations in the area in the coming days. The annual Capital Pride festival is also going on in D.C. through June 17.
Mayor Vincent Gray, who attended the high school’s Pride Day, told reporters that the Westboro Baptist church “can go straight to hell.”
How did his wife feel about this?
Why do Kids need to know what this deviant does? I has no place in the school!

Question for the Principal: Would he have felt pride coming out as a heterosexual? Would such an announcement have been met with applause and a newspaper article or would the hetero been subject to an investigation?

Anybody notice how many homosexuals end up choosing a career in teaching children?

So, we can celebrate sodomy, but not religion.
Whatever happened to going to school to learn useful things like basic English, mathematics, American History, etc? Kids are graduating from high schools all over the country now with no basic skills, but they know everything about homosexuality. What are they learning? If they can’t be good at what they do they can always “come out” and then nobody will ever be able to criticize them again. And don’t even THINK about firing them or peacefully declining to associate with them or you’re going right to court.
This is where we are as a culture.
Years ago, a homosexual principal would have been summarily fired.
Today, homosexuality is openly celebrated.
The tone of this article makes it sound as if he had great courage to come out as he did. He knows there’s no chance of him being fired or reprimanded in any way due to this. How much courage does it take to do this, in today’s world???
Try being an evangelical Christian, and come out to your students in a school, proclaiming your Christianity. Then see what the reaction would be. Then let’s talk.
