I guarantee you the way this worked was somebody was screwing around and got caught, then tried to deflect blame by bringing up all this history. What the Navy did was take down an exceptional officer and pilot and get to discredit Naval Aviation again on charges that are totally blown out of proportion.

I have no idea. I have read it was a woman with a vendetta for who knows what reason. She waited more than a year to accuse Captain McWherter. People who were there and know her want to know why. It is a terrible thing.

It has been reported that the Navy wants to remove the biggest example of sexual imagery from its aircraft: the tail hook. It is obviously symbolic of the male penis, and thus very offensive to some.

The Navy has to figure out how to then land its aircraft on carriers
