Longtime baseball fixture Don Zimmer dies at 83

The Tampa Bay Rays say former major league manager, coach and player Don Zimmer has died. He was 83.
Zimmer died Wednesday. He had been in a rehabilitation center in Florida since having heart surgery in mid-April.
Zimmer spent more than 60 years in baseball. He was a senior adviser for the Rays.

I remember the bench brawl over 10 years ago when as the Yankees 3rd base coach he took on Pedro Martinez.

I hate to hear it. Don was my kind of baseball man. He was tough as nails. If I remember it right, baseball first mandated batting helmets after Don was nearly killed by a pitch.

Funniest thing about that story...If he hadn't said anything to the Globe and/or the Herald about Lee referring to him running around like a gerbil, we never would have known.
