My dog does love cats, though-she sleeps on the floor with “her” 3, and is friendly with neighbors’ cats...

I’ve owned Alsatians..Dobes...Giant Schnauzers....many Rotts.....American bulldogs...more dangerous than much smaller Pits in my opinion

Worst dog attack I know of on a specialist dog handler was from a large 90 pound Hoytt dobe ...same place my red came from....excellent strain of Robes.....this one had been abused

I sure do admire Huskies - But I have always been partial to Malamutes myself... crossed with Wolf or G.Shepherd... Makes for a monster dog, and long in the leg, good for a pack or a pull... Smart as a whip, and don't take no guff from nobody. My last one was quite a scrapper, and liked nothing better than finding a bear to harass. Makes for a pretty easy and confident walk in the backwoods, that does...

I fell ill a while back, can't walk enough to stretch one of them out anymore, so my current pup is a mini Aussie Shepherd... makes for a decent cow dog. He's good on a whistle or a signal at range, and a good companion. And his poop goes right up the mower chute, which is a great feature.

But I am getting better, and the guy that I get my Malamutes from came down out of the sticks this spring to barter a pup to me for some work (I fix computers)... Beautiful blue eyed pup, with a black mouth and meat grabbers that cover half my palm @ 6 weeks. He's gonna be a big, big dude, sired from the (son of the) brother of my last one. Broke my heart to turn him down, but maybe next year.

That's just being neighborly... And that Husky probably would have used that Yorkie for a squeaky toy... It is a wonder to me that she can take the heat down there. Mine weren't really comfy till it gets below freezing, and they lay out on the snow like it's the beach at ten below.

Ain't that funny? mine have all put up with neighbor cats, and love their own too... But if there is an interloper, it is dead meat, just like that. And they discriminate against bobs and cougars too, without a thought.

Not sure what lists you're referring to. What I'm talking about is not opinion, but facts gathered from the CDC's collection or statistics. So you had a dog on the dangerous list and it didn't rip off your face. Good! But this doesn't mean that the breed is safe, simply that you weren't attacked. In fact anectodal evidence "it was the sweetest dog... bs bs bs etc." is meaningless. It's only from the collection of data over many incidents that patterns emerge, and that pattern is pit bulls and rotweilers are dangerous.

Pit bulls are estimated at 6% of the us dog populaton (from American kennel club records I believe) and yet year over year they account for over half of the deaths and maimings reported. Some other delusional poster claimed it was the owners, not the dogs. Sorry, but she's living in a world that only peripherially impinges on the real one. Just as dog breeds differ in appearance, they also differ in temperment, and all the self delusion in the world won't change this fact

There are numerous vicious dog lists, put out periodically by insurers, sometimes even media, based on anecdotal evidence-all somewhat alike, but also reflecting the breed preferences and media hype of the time.

I really don’t think the CDC is a reliable source of fact, either-considering how they mismanage the information on flu and the vaccines every year, and downplay diseases brought here via jumbo jet, or illegal immigrant, I’m not inclined to accept their pronouncements as gospel truth...

I had three dogs-not one-on the dangerous list of the time who were never a problem, but that wasn’t the main point-I was saying that like the list, opinions change, and statistics can easily be manipulated to fit the prevailing opinion. The dangerous dogs of my youth were Dobermans and Shepherds.

Pitbulls were these Boxer-looking terriers that some tourists and carneys from Florida brought on vacation with them, but thugs in city ‘hoods-or the country equivalent- had barely heard of, never mind owned as a statement of bad.

Funny how you pick and choose what parts of my post you resond to. You don't trust the CDC, well neither do I all that much, but in the absence of any other source, I'll say that they have the best data available, and they have no particular axe to grind about one breed over the other.

You either deliberately missed my point about anecdotal evidence or didn't understand it, because anecdotal evidence is exactly what I think should NOT be used to judge things.

We can disagree on things about what color is best for cars, how much one should spend on a trip to the restaurant, etc, and this is simply different opinions, but where there is actualy factual evidence, to take the opposite viewpoint from what the evidence shows isn't a difference of opinion, but the denial of reality. You can rationalize it away with the (somewhat justified) view that the CDC isn't all that accurate, but they're certainly more accurate in showing a pattern than your fortunately good experience with dogs on the dangerous list. You can google "dog bite statistics" and every source I've seen lists pit bulls and rotweilers and breeds which cause more deaths and visits to the ER than any other.

My dog is a Siberian Husky, gray and white, blue eyes. They are bigger than those Alaskan Huskies that are more popular-she weighs a bit over 70 pounds, and I’ve been told they were also bred with wolves and German Shepherds in the last 100 or so years to keep inbreeding down and health up.

She was purchased from a kennel the AKC recommended in Wa state, up near the border with Canada, and has been my companion since she was 9 weeks old-the breed is apparently very hardy-she is 15 and still chases squirrels into trees.

My dog does not spend time in the heat-from May to September, except for going out with me for a walk several times a day, she hangs out indoors with the cats where it is cool. I take her out every morning before sunrise and comb about a pound of fur off of her, all summer...

Last winter was really cold, and when we would go out, she would head straight to the riverbank, where the wind was blowing the coldest, and romp in the dry grass until I was shivering and brought her back in. At night, she would sit outside howling back at the coyotes-as you said-like it was the beach when it was 16-20 degrees with wind blowing and snowflakes-until she got bored and I was frozen stiff.

There are no bears here, but that may change soon, according to the game warden-mountain lions here stay well away from humans, but I see their tracks sometimes when hiking in the woods after a rain, along with the ones of the wild hogs, deer and other wildlife-there is plenty of game for them to eat, and places to go-this county has always been very conscious of the dangers of overcrowding and the need to conserve all natural resources-there is a moratorium on development, and an acreage requirement on residential building. The only industry here is dude ranches and other tourist stuff...

I was brought up on a ranch, and haven’t lived in a city in over 13 years-I live around people who don’t really care what goes on there, or the opinion of people there. Maybe it is a redneck thing.

I do not know anyone who has ever had a kid attacked by a Pit, Rottie, or any dog besides a Chihuahua-and that made the local paper-it happened because a parent had left a 6 year old alone with a visiting relative’s ill tempered little dog. I don’t like those little purse dogs, but this was the fault of the parent, not the purse dog.

As an aside, the CDC is one of the agencies that collects stats-real or manipulated-to support gun control-that is not an agency I trust to use the best data available for anything but their own purposes and agenda.

If you find that her hair is drying out in the summer (a pretty common problem for Husky/Malamute/Samoyed dogs, don't forget that she requires fish in her diet - that is what they have eaten for the thousands of years they've been with Man... Trout or Salmon work good hereabouts (dunno if that is available down there), normally fed to them frozen, and I always gave it to them at least a couple times a month, though it has been their primary diet when possible - They won't even look at dog food if there is fish around.

But you will be astonished what it will do for her coat... and it aids them when they are shedding too.

Trout and salmon are available fresh in the nearest town with a supermarket-22 miles-and it is really expensive, unlike local fish like river perch and catfish. Husky girl likes catfish-I have it a couple times a week, since fresh caught catfish is available all the time here-as soon as I get the broken fish trap I found down on the riverbank mended, I can catch some right here.

I also buy a fish supplement for northern sled doggies from a pet supply place, but she likes sharing the catfish with me best. Her favorite treat is a tablespoon of the sunflower kernels I eat with yogurt and coffee for breakfast. When she first started begging for those, I thought it was weird, but my vet said a small amount is okay for her...

Yep... Considering who I am talking to, I wasn't figuring you'd be going to the market for fish : )

Here of course, we have trout (rainbow, cutthroat, brookies, grayling, bull, and mackinaw) and salmon (kokanee) in fair abundance. Perch, sunfish, bluegill, whitefish, largemouth bass, and Northern Pike too, though the dogs don't like fish with scales as much. Even found me a small population of bullhead catfish in one creek - dunno how they got there, but there they are... The dogs always turned their nose up at catfish (what with all the trout and salmon, I don't blame them), which is why I thought your girl would too.

Usually gave the dogs the macks, which are good if you smoke them, but they tend to be pretty greasy... The mutts don't care, and Macks get big, so there's a lot on them.

I kinda figured what you probably got down there - I've fished a lot of muddy water (kin in IL, KS, MO, and TN) and gigged a frog or two in my day : )

Well, now that the story is proving to be yet another Internet hoax, I would expect that most people on this thread are feeling pretty stupid this morning. You guys have been had.

Color me cynical but 99% of these type of stories just don't pass the smell test and I'm a bit ashamed that so many Freepers are so quick to pounce upon them and get themselves all emotionally involved - all for nothing. Collectively speaking, we need to smarten up and not be so gullible because we come across as a pack of uneducated rubes, and this destroys our credibility on other matters. Let's stop being tools.
