Five minutes was too much to add but I had figured on at least three.

In England, they call it "Fergie Time".

I’m watching Verlander get shelled by the Royals. A good day so far.

Jozy’s gone. There’s no way he’s coming back from that in time.

Damn shame right at the time he pulled up, he was going to win that ball and make a run into the box.

Sure could’ve used Landon. This was one gamble that Klinsi lost, hopefully it won’t cost them.

Heck, any rule against the coach playing? Klinsi could still knock ‘em in I bet.

We need our best athletes to start choosing soccer over football and basketball.

As more and more Americans make a decent living at professional soccer in the MLS and Europe, that will encourage more to go down that path....It’s the one sport with professional leagues all over the globe, so if you have some talent, you can find a team.

I don’t think Portugal plays well as a team. Too much reliance on Ronaldo. Very average in midfield, I think Bradley will do much better against them than Ghana.

I expect Ghana to at least tie, if not beat Portugal when they play.

It’s only liberals and the like that like or care about futbol in the US. Or foreigners.

Maradana Hand of God.

I mean, who can take this seriously? Obama lovers and other liberals like it because it is not American. They want us to be just like the rest of the world.

No American exceptionalism for you.

I see the World Cup as one of the last bastions of Nationalism left.

Several of you have posted defenses of soccer’s lackadaisical timekeeping procedures. Thanks for your efforts, but I haven’t heard a convincing argument yet. What do you have against accurate and accountable timekeeping? Keep in mind, I haven’t employed the typical FR arguments that soccer is “not American” or “for weenies” or “for liberals” and so forth. I just think that the main ref has way too much power, and his control of the clock is part of that, and can easily be fixed.

I’m not sure what you mean.

You mean nationalism for all those other countries?

Not sure how that relates to the US.

"..it is not American."

Correct. Just like pizza, hot dogs, and beer.

As a longstanding United man, I loved that. Especially when SAF got to keep it himself :)

It’s not that we necessarily approve of the system. But we understand that any alternative is worse.

And the irony is that you are using the above as an excuse to cheer against the USA. Or are you "joking," again?

I thought Ghana shoved the United States around in midfield all night long. We had two moments of brilliance and some fairly solid defending and snatched a win.

But you are right to note the individualism of Portugal’s players. Nani and Ronaldo alone can cause headaches for friend and foe alike.

We have work to do in midfield before Portugal. Part of that involves finding a different role for Bradley, in my view. I know Klinsmann wants him off the strikers but he looked like he was invisible for huge stretches of today’s match.

Given Portugal’s health state you may well be right about Ghana. One of those teams will be playing for at least a mathematical shot at the round of 16 so it should be very entertaining.

Thanks for the thread - I enjoyed watching it with you guys and glad you won - I had to run off to the doctors with a minute of extra time left so I presume they still won anyway. You guys have a great defense and are very dangerous on the counter attack - it would be great if you had a midfielder who could dwell on the ball a bit longer but they may depend on who you are playing. Good luck in the rest of the Cup I will be watching with great interest!

Those people in the stands aren’t waving UN or European Union flags.

I’m with u Steve on this one - it has always been a source of annoyance for me. They could have sideline timekeepers and every time the ref blows time out the clock could be stopped and also when a goal is scored - then they could replace the refs whistle to signal full time with a siren like in Australian football!

I like it the way it is, because the players can’t make any assumptions as to when exactly time will be up.
