Eric Altidore, he’s one of Team USA’s best offensive players. Being without him would be a considerable loss.

Jozy Altidore is a striker and his loss will hurt, as we didn’t bring that many to Brazil. He is also (arguably) one of the better players on the team.

Now the question is who does Klinsmann call into the team? Does he keep his word about Donovan being the first replacement?

I don’t know the rules for that one. Don’t you have to play with the roster you bring?

We’ll be lucky if we make it past the Round Of 16 but realistically, Team USA has zero chance of making it to the championship game on July 13.

"People really don’t pay attention to the clock."

As an American, that always been one of my issues with soccer. American football and basketball are timed down to the tenth of a second, we have instant-replay to correct timing errors, and those tenths-of-a-second sometimes make a difference. Soccer's Medieval sense of timekeeping has always bothered me. If they don't care about accurate time, why don't they just use an hourglass?

Its just more exciting not to have to be bound by an arbitrary time.

It brings out the best in players on the field.

Last time I went to a MLS game, they used the “non-Medieval” method. And frankly (in my opinion), it ruined the game for me.

I’d rather they have so-so time keeping than commercial breaks. I watched this game, had really no clue what was going on but I dug that it didn’t go to commercial break all the time. Refreshing.

I don’t like that the ball goes out of bounds all the time but I guess it’s grueling enough that they need some breaks. Just that it happens all the time. Also the flopping element is pretty bad.

The wild celebrations after a goal is scored are pretty grating to me, but at least it doesn’t happen for mundane things 30 times a game.

Anyone know who the guy was that left with the Hammy injury? Is he a important player for us?

Jozy Altidore and yes, he is. He is the best target striker the USA has. If he is out for any length of time it will make a significant difference in how the USA approaches the remaining group matches.

I will double check into it for how it is now, but in 2002 there was an injury and an alternate was flown into Korea IIRC.

(yeah...whatevs....we'll take this Ghana win. We've had our heart broken enough times with them. Sure....we're not favored...so what? :) )

Having played soccer, I would say it was very nonphysical. I saw little hard contact.

Having played rugby for many years, I wouldn't call soccer a contact sport.

The MLS has reverted to classic FIFA rules.

They’ve managed to become profitable by building football-specific stadiums.

And every team in the league is centrally owned. America has a deep bench of professional talent.

Someday, we’ll win the World Cup.

That will always remain a hypothetical... at least during this century.

He can't. Once the tournament begins the 23-man roster is locked. Changes are allowed due to serious injury up to 24 hours before the first match.

The MLS tried it in their first season, and it did not work. When the players can see the actual time, the game dies at the end. When you’re down 2 goals and you know for certain there is only 40 secs left, both teams stop playing. When the ref keeps time, and he is the only one who knows, the players will play to the whistle. Plus the ref will allow an attacking team to complete a late attack before blowing a whistle. The ref will wait to see if there is a score or a clearance before ending the game, usually with the ball in midfield. There is no blowing of whistles while a shot is in progress at a high level, thou you will see that at the HS level from refs who I believe have never seen a pro game.
