Not to pick nits, but there’s nothing in the article that identifies the state. It is customary for a poster to place the state name in the keywords section. And since the entire article text was posted and not excerpted, there’s no need to click a link.
If he is 58 then he would have been 17 in 1973 when the war ended.
S’ok.... you can pick my nits any ‘ol time. I was just tryin’ to be helpful. As for the ‘Nam vet thing, at 58 he was born around ‘55 or so. So he might have been in country before the pull out, or perhaps was a Marine stationed at the Embassy. It’s possible.
If his birthday is tomorrow, he’s almost 59, and could have been there for the last year. Then again, the press often identifies BB guns as assault rifles... They may have his age wrong, or something else.
Which reminds me of an old joke.
When old Ethel went down to see the doc for her annual checkup, the doc exclaimed...
"Whew! Ethel! Good heavens you smell awful! Haven't you had a bath or shower?"

Thanks, clerk. You just let an armed robber escape to rob again. And maybe murder. You have not made society better, you have maybe made it worse. If the robber kills someone next time, it will be your fault.

So, you saved yourself the hassle of cleaning up after. You didn’t feel like protecting society that night. You didn’t want a sense of guilt for killing. You didn’t want the risk that some stupid prosecutor would try to prosecute you for something.
Blah, blah. Excuses are easy, and everybody can come up with one. But you didn’t do your duty as a citizen, to stop an armed violent crime and a violent, dangerous criminal. You let a rabid dog go.
The clerk was not carrying the weapon to protect the store or the community. That is the job of the police department. He was carrying the weapon for SELF-PROTECTION which is the same reason I carry. My weapon is to protect my wife and myself, not someone else’s property or someone else’s life.
Would you be willing to pay all legal costs involved had the clerk, shot and wounded or killed the robber? If not, why not?

All citizens are effectively the police. The uniformed police are just a convenience.
For many years, the public has been encouraged to believe that inaction and indifference to violent crime and criminals, when you have adequate means to stop it and them, using the excuse that uniformed police exist, is an affirmative defense, that is, that it defeats or mitigates the legal consequences of their otherwise unlawful conduct.
But the truth is that inaction or indifference, when you have the means, constitute reckless endangerment, if no one is seriously injured or killed, or even depraved indifference, if someone is killed due to inaction.
This is best illustrated by a police officer who detains a violent criminal in the commission of a felony, and then decides to let them go for some petty reason. No one would blink an eye if that officer was charged with a crime.
But carrying a gun, even if you intend it solely for self defense, gives you the means to prevent a violent crime and stop a violent criminal. If you choose not to do so, it is like observing an apartment building on fire at night, but choosing to not call the fire department, “because you don’t want to get involved.”
Even if you cannot be prosecuted for it, there is no, zero righteous justification for your inaction.

That’s the problem right there. You can and will be prosecuted if there is the slightest reason to do so. You are not protected by a thin blue line. If other people want the same protection that I have, then they too can carry as I do.

Well, it depends on jurisdiction. In the case of Vermont, where this took place, while it has no stand your ground law or castle doctrine law, for the most part the law is clear.
§ 2305. Justifiable homicide
If a person kills or wounds another under any of the circumstances enumerated below, he or she shall be guiltless:
...(2) In the suppression of a person attempting to commit murder, sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, burglary or robbery, with force or violence.
This being said, it is up to the local law enforcement and prosecutor whether or not to file charges. In much of the country today, police just shrug off such shootings, and there being no charges, the shooter is free to go his own way. In many states with SYG and Castle there is even limited immunity to wrongful death lawsuit.
So arrest and prosecution is not a given. But it should be a factor in your decision whether or not to shoot the villain.
However, above and beyond the law, a dead robber robs no more, nor will they come back to your place with a deadlier weapon.
Someone else’s decision not to protect themselves does not place their lack of determination on my shoulders. If other people want the same protection that I have, then they too can carry as I do.
