Johnson, Earnhardt, Jr. nominated for ESPYs:

Teammates #48-Jimmie Johnson and #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. have something else in common now. Both are among the driver nominees for this year’s ESPY awards. Johnson is on the ballot in two categories — for best championship performance for his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup title and for best driver. Other nominees in the best championship performance category are: NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs; UConn’s Shabazz Napier, who helped the Huskies upset Kentucky to win the men’s NCAA tournament; and David Ortiz of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox. Joining him in the best driver category are: Hendrick Motorsports teammate Earnhardt Jr., 2013 IndyCar champion Scott Dixon, 2014 Indianapolis 500 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay and 2013 NHRA Funny Car titlist John Force.(USA Today)(6-25-2014)

It’s OK for NASA to do this but can’t let the National Guard Sponsor a few Teams, any bets one of the five tents will have camel diversity crap in it??
********************************************************

NASA Langley Rockets to Kentucky Speedway for NASCAR Races:

NASA will take visitors into space, then bring them down to Earth in an exhibit that combines NASA technology and education during this week’s NASCAR races at the Kentucky Speedway. Technicians and others from NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, will be at the Sparta, Kentucky speedway, June 26 -28, with five tents of models, displays and artifacts that will highlight NASA’s contributions to aerospace research and everyday life, including technology being used in racecars. “Rockets to Racecars” not only looks at how many of the same principles that apply to flight apply to automobile racing, such as aerodynamics, drag and propulsion, but also how NASA technology has improved racecar safety and driver health. Also on display - something that drivers depend on - tires. A wheel exhibit will show tires used here on Earth and some designed for outer space. A NASCAR tire, two space shuttle tires, lunar rover tire, and lunar Spring Tire will sit side-by-side giving everyone the chance to compare wheels of yesterday, today and tomorrow.(Kentucky Speedway)(6-25-2014)

Apron at Indy delayed til 2015.
Sort of bummed because racing was better when they had it.
(It was removed before Nascar started in 94)

Seldom has an eight-foot-wide stretch of asphalt been so anticipated and yet so delayed.

But as preparations build for next month’s NASCAR race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, track officials have decided another year must pass without the apron, the proposed racing room below the white boundary line in each corner.

The reason: NASCAR officials want time to study the effects of changes made to the track. The Brickyard 400 is July 27.

IMS had planned to begin apron installation June 9, the day after its vintage car weekend, but NASCAR thought that was too late.

“They asked if we could postpone (the project) so they could test it,” IMS president Doug Boles said Tuesday. “We said, ‘That makes sense; we understand that.’ “

Boles said the heavy Indiana winter delayed several IMS projects, including the installation the asphalt sections totaling more than a mile in length. With spring-like weather late to arrive, IMS officials didn’t want to risk the added surface not being ready for Indianapolis 500 activities in May.

The apron existed for IndyCar drivers through the 1992 race, but it was removed after a series of bad-angle crashes. Nelson Piquet, Jeff Andretti and Mario Andretti were among those suffering serious leg and feet injuries that year as their cars spun to nose-first impacts.

Removing the apron reduced the travel distance to the wall and therefore changed the angle of impact for most crashes. But modifications to the Indy cars over the years and the development of the energy-absorbing wall barriers have lessened concerns on the open-wheel side.

Still, talk of the apron’s return might never have materialized without stock cars, which have raced at IMS since ‘94. There are conflicting opinions on how the extra eight feet might impact NASCAR races, but many consider it a step worth exploring given the lack of width for the larger machines to maneuver.

Veteran Sprint Cup Series driver Matt Kenseth said the angle of the apron is key. If it’s too flat, he said Tuesday, “I don’t think it will make any difference.”

“There’s a lot of talk about that extra pavement at Pocono (Raceway) and the only thing that’s good for is if you blow up (an engine) you can get off the track,” he said. “There’s no way you can race on it.”

But Boles said the IMS apron would be an extension of the track, meaning it would follow the 9-degree corner banking. Of course, engineering costs money, and Boles said adding the apron isn’t as simple as laying asphalt. It requires excavation below the current sod line, addressing drainage issues and providing precise angles.

Boles said it’s “easily” a seven-figure expense.

“It’s a huge undertaking,” he said.

But it figures to be a question of when it will happen rather than if. Boles said IMS stakeholders have signed off on the project.

“We’ll probably just push (installation) to a time when there’s time to test it,” he said.

Funny Sonoma story from years ago. I'll never forget this moment for as long as I live. Wonder if Chad remembers?

From JR's Twitter page.

I'm guessing this is Jr talking about Himself.

NASCAR announces 2015 Daytona testing dates:

As NASCAR teams prepare for next week’s round two at Daytona International Speedway following Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s memorable 2014 Daytona 500 victory, plans for 2015’s season launch are already underway. NASCAR and Daytona International Speedway announced that Preseason Thunder will take place one week later in 2015. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams will hit the track on January 15-16 as they prepare for the 57th running of the Daytona 500 on February 22, 2015. In the event of rain, additional track time will be added on Saturday, January 17.

“Each year, Preseason Thunder gives fans a sneak peek into the upcoming season, and specifically, NASCAR’s crown jewel, the Daytona 500,” said Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition and racing development. “In 2015, the date will change. The anticipation, and the thrill of cars returning to the race track, will not. A later starting date for January testing will be more convenient for both teams and fans,” Chitwood said. “Both testing sessions are important opportunities for teams as they prepare for their season-opening events ... It’s also an exciting time for fans as they get gear up for the start of the new season.”

The Preseason Thunder Fan Fest, the companion event to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series testing, is scheduled on Thursday night, Jan. 15. Tickets for Preseason Thunder Fan Fest as well as a schedule of driver question-and-answer and autograph sessions will be available at a later date.(NASCAR)(6-25-2014)

#77 team “retooling”: Randy Humphrey’s race team won’t be at Kentucky Speedway this weekend — but that’s not because the operation is shutting down. “We’re retooling things,” Humphrey said Tuesday by telephone. “We’re just trying to find the right people. ... We have not shut down.” The #77 car of Randy Humphrey Racing has competed in four NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events this season, all with veteran driver Dave Blaney behind the wheel. The team had entered every race until this past weekend’s event on the Sonoma Raceway road course, although it ultimately withdrew from the Daytona 500, the most recent oval race at Michigan International Speedway two weeks ago, and two other events earlier this year. Humphrey said the hiatus isn’t due to funding — the competition level of his #77 car simply wasn’t what he had hoped. Humphrey said he hopes to return to the track for the July 27 Crown Royal Presents the John Walding 400 at The Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “You will not see us at Daytona (next weekend), but I do suspect you will be seeing us at Indy forward, hopefully,” he said. “That’s our plan. We have some meetings that are going on, and we’re just interviewing some people. We had to retool some people and that kind of thing to get ourselves in order here.”(NASCAR.com)(6-25-2014)
