WATCH: Atlanta Father, Son Catch 884-Pound Fish in Canada

Talk about a big fish. An Atlanta man and his father last week caught an 884-pound sturgeon during a fishing trip to Canada.

According to Great River Fishing Adventures, 19-year-old Paul Jarvis hooked the 11-foot-10 white sturgeon Thursday morning on the Fraser River.

“In the first few minutes I had it on the line, I couldn’t believe the weight and power of the fish," said Jarvis, who battled the fish with the help of his father, Ron, for about an hour. "I am a big guy, and I could barely hold on to the rod let alone begin to reel the fish."

After about an hour, a tour guide and crew tagged the sturgeon – a protected species – and released it.

Having grown up around Grady-Whites, I tend to notice unusual working boats, and that’s a very nice one. No idea what it is, though. Jet boat most likely, that’s what they run on rivers. Shallow draft but looks very stable. Good lines, honest and practical, not an ounce of pretense about it.

Doesn’t look big enough to be 884 lbs. I could see maybe 150 lbs. Based on the length and the girth, seems that a typo error is in play here. [184 lbs?]

I don’t think that it is one of theirs, but this outfit builds that kind of purpose built solid boat. I mentored the guy who does their CAD.

The world record white Sturgeon weighed 1100 lbs and was 12'-4" long. This one was just under 12'. Don't try to make a living estimating the weight of fish

Oh, they released it. I just love smoked sturgeon. Carp, too, but have to watch for the tiny bones.

I got curious and went looking around on the web, I think it might be by these guys:

They’re custom welded aluminum, available with a diesel jet drive. Didn’t know you could do that.

Looks like very similar construction. I have a message off to my friend asking if they have done a diesel jet.

Yep, pretty sure it’s them. Here’s a video of one going up the Salmon River in Idaho.

Ummmmmm...the fish is 12 feet long...that means that each 6 foot section weighs about +400 pounds....I’ve seen a few 6 feet tall men who weigh near that, but the fish doesn’t look like it is even close to 800 pounds.....unless it swallowed a LOT of lead fishing sinkers...
