The United States was eliminated from the World Cup, but it went out battling. Belgium beat the Americans, 2-1, in the Round of 16 at Salvador, with all the goals coming in extra time.
Tim Howard was heroic in keeping the game scoreless through 90 minutes, and he ended the evening credited officially with 15 saves. But in the third minute of extra time, Kevin De Bruyne finally broke the deadlock. He was set up by Romelu Lukaku, who had just come into the match.
Lukaku made it 2-0 at 105 minutes, seemingly putting the match out of reach.
But the 19-year-old Julian Green came on for the start of the second extra period and scored on his first touch, taking an inch-perfect pass from Michael Bradley and volleying it home to make it 2-1 in the 107th minute.
The Americans came close to tying a couple of times in the final minutes but couldnt quite connect.

What is “World Cup’? What is all the excitment?
You are cute though I know you try to avoid it.
Folks that think they have traveled a vast distance when they move from Joisey or Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island too...to Manhattan. They think they have made a quantum leap.
They have no idea.
There are kids from Indiana, Alabama, Texas, Monatana, Alaska who make the same leap...yet it isn't the same is it.
I have many friends from the tri-state area...they underestimate the rest of America!
The leap from rural America to Manhattan is indeed quantum.
Get your brain around that.
As an aside, I learned yesterday of a Hungarian guy who moved to America to establish a career in "The Blues". His stage name is Little G Weevil, check his out. He's not even American...
Well, isn’t that why it’s so popular among school girls? No one gets hurt if no one scores. To be honest, I’ve seen more aggressive games of charades than I’ve seen at my local soccer field (next door to my house).
Do you have red hair?
Just kidding. Sort of.
You, obviously, played a much more “professional” game of whiffle ball than I did. I basically was the kind of kid who whined to get into the game and then struck out so badly they removed me and had me run bases. I ran fast as a kid and was close to the ground.
Unwieldy, overblown, a tad embarrassing at best, not especially attractive or even functional...all in all something that should be kept on the back shelf.
No. Just because I’m bad-tempered doesn’t mean I have red hair, sadly.
Well, isnt that why its so popular among school girls
...it’s the gender equity crowds wet dream...a game that girls can play with boys, and not be blown right off the field...
Yeah. I agree.
Just precise.
OK...enough flirting. Check out this thread...Little G Weevil
Oy, another thread! Time for bed.
Possibly not best buds because German became one of the official languages through a couple of invasions...
Check it out. I would appreciate your input.
350 lb linemen with huge guts are athletes ? And never mind the rampant HGH use.
I noticed that too. What's the saying...you are your record? It helps put things in perspective.
Sorry if I don’t like little Pepe Le Pews running around the goal post. And, yes, I do think our ball players are great athletes.
Regarding the American-ness of soccer:
I grew up at a time when soccer was played mostly by ethnic minorities, all proud to be American, but still tied to the old country, and the World Cup was always a much celebrated event...
Now I enjoy seeing quite a melting-pot of Americans play the beautiful game, with a distinct and developing American flavor, and with a national team that is consistently qualifying and playing in the World Cup, this is a big deal...
I very much appreciate what the US team accomplished in this World Cup, the future looks very bright, and I expect we will attract more players, fans and converts!!!
And the soccer moms have a huge influence on that!!!
...again, sorry...but soccer moms are a myth dreamed up by liberal political hacks...
Does NFL NOT depress scoring, huh???
.If you are a male like I'm, then you don't understand how a Soccer Mom think (Lib or not), which first is about protection of her "baby's" safety and that he/she does not need to be a 300-lbs "monster" to compete, and that has absolutely nothing to do with politics, but a cheap comment!
20 years ago U.S.soccer team was a laughing stock, not any more. Some of the players are even playing overseas in high end football clubs as professionals!!
Take a look around on sports facilities and you see as many practicing soccer as you see NFL-type practicing thanks to the Soccer Moms and I know as many Conservative Moms as Libtards. So your petty excuse of inflaming politics into a great sport, (the most popular sport in the world) does not hold waters, and is not an appropriate comment. BTW as playing soccer when I was young, I still do love watching NFL playing out!!!
Does NFL NOT depress scoring, huh???
...I guess you’re right...after all, there are just oodles of games ending in scores of 3-2...

...I’m sorry...but huh...?

...well considering the nature of this forum centers around politics, I just naturally thought...well, you know...
