They are PC versions of the books; wasn’t the elf that takes Frodo to be healed (past the black riders) a guy in the books?

Yup. Glorfindel. Though in other parts of the legendarium, JRR has some of the elven women as fighters. Notably Galadriel fights in one of the battles while the Noldor are leaving Aman. Presumably other elven women were also fighters, and just didn't make it into the stories.

Eowyn was the only kick-ass female in the books, but she by herself ought to be enough to satisfy any feminist, IMO.

Take today's problems with females in combat and multiply them by some factor, and you have the problem of females in hand to hand combat against males.

Snore. I can’t stay awake during the first one. I don’t think I will make it to the third.

Letteri went on to speak about how the ending of this movie would lead into and help fans better understand the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

How could it, when Peter Jackass totally butchered the story ?

And they weren't just lttle changes. Some characters became the exact opposite of the way Tolkien had written them.

After being disgusted by the travesty of LOR, I have refused to see Hobbit. My wife has, but then she's more tolerant than I am.

There are two shortened 3 hour fan edits of the Hobbit, with the non tolkien stuff removed. I prefer the one called there and back again to the trilogy.

there are two "fan edits"...the three hour one is discussed here... but you have to get it from a torrent site....he gives a link to a torrent site if you scroll down.

the four hour edit is discussed here. and he also has torrent links.
