Twenty-five years ago this Saturday, “Seinfeld” debuted on NBC.

It didn’t do particularly well at first, but it slowly began gathering viewers and then — yada yada yada — it permanently changed the way that we, as New Yorkers, talk.

In honor of those 25 years, here are 25 things that “Seinfeld” added to the popular vernacular over the course of its nine seasons on the air (1989-98).

I know it was a hugely liberal show, but it was definitely one of the best ever written IMO, along with M*A*S*H and (to a lesser degree) Frasier.

Looking back, Seinfeld got away with a lot of very non-PC jokes and story lines, poking fun of stereotypes that actually have some basis of truth in them and not being afraid to point that out and that if it was a new TV show on a major network today, they’d never get away with it today.

Elaine was from Towson (rhymes with How) not Bowie (rhymes with Boo).

EVERYONE: The point of the article is for a word or two -- not sentences and lines — from Seinfeld that have become an everyday part of our vocabulary. (I'm as guilty as everyone else in citing to complete lines.)

I’m so happy they included “these pretzels are making me thirsty...”

“These pretzels are making me thirsty,” "yada, yada, yada," and "not that there's anything wrong with it," are the three Seinfeld lines that I use the most in everyday life. There have been times at my neighborhood Irish Pub when, while eating pretzels, drinking Guinness, and watching a sporting event, I'll blurt out, "these pretzels are making me thirsty." The early babyboomers and college kids are in the know and will nod at me in recognition, but everyone in between seems obvlivious to Seinfeld.

I use “not that there’s anything wrong with that” - especially when talking about homosexuality. What a great, great show.

It was always such a polite show. Filled with polite New Yorkers (my people).
