Soldiers then, truckers now ... what’s the diff?
When I was a student at the Air War College back in the 1970s, we had a lecture from an outside speaker on "job satisfaction." He had done a lot of research on what jobs resulted in a lot of satisfaction for their holders. According to him, truck drivers had a high level of job satisfaction. Among the things he told us about, though, was the "California Turnaround." Allegedly a pill a driver could take in New York, which would allow him to drive to California and back without stopping to sleep. It was the subject of a lot jokes among the students for the rest of the course.
