FYI, the guy who plays Sulu is from the tv show “MythBusters”.

The Axanar trailers are about the most professional I’ve ever seen for a fan production. They’ve got nothing but real Trek vets and Richard Hatch from the original Battlestar: Galactica in that one. These Kickstarter projects are light years beyond half the dreck SyFy airs anymore, and the cable networks could take a tip or two from them. The first tip is, “Your shows SUCK.” When you get people to pony up the money to see what they’re really asking for, that ought to light up a few dormant synapses in some corporate exec somewhere. In theory.

I saw a few of those. They even got original cast members to reprise roles.

William Windom resolved what happened when he took the shuttlecraft into the Doomsday Machine.

I remember seeing that a one that they did a few years ago. And I'm watching and thinking that guy looks familiar; hey, its Dr. Seth Haxzitt from Murder She Wrote. So I looked it up and sure enough he was in the original episode on Star Trek.

How do they get around copyright? They must have a license of some sort. And those sets cost a good chunk.

Paramount is tolerant of, or at least more or less silent on, fan fiction (including film) provided it isn't made for monetary gain.

Hence, the sets, like the movies, are fan-produced, and since they can't make money off them, a labour of love. Some of these constructions are pretty good - for the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Relics" (the one with Scotty), the captain's chair and nav console were rented from the fan who built them. And, of course, modern PCs have enough computing power that it's literally possible to create production-quality video and CGI for next to nothing.

Impressive.

Thought Sulu looked familiar — he was one of the second team MythBusters.

(And the Empire’s ladies are definitely to be preferred to those of the Federation)

According to their Wiki page, the kickstarter-funded budget was a hair over $126,000 for all 3 episodes.

Yep, well done. And Chris Doohan sounds just like his dad. There's a few short vignettes at the STC webpage for further perusal including a short set walkthrough.
