"URGENT! BREAKING AS I WRITE THIS... Israel is currently starting the ground invasion in to Gaza!
It is currently 2am local time in Israel, they are shelling from the ground, small arms are being used and a reporter in Gaza just stated that he has seen Israeli Special Forces landing on the beach."
Only Hamas is claiming this so far as far as I can tell.
23:00 GMT: Hamas claims to be engaging Israeli troops landing on a beach near Gaza City and several reports of gunfire and explosions begin to surface on social media.
It was not immediately clear if Israeli ground forces are involved in the battle and Israeli military correspondents were quick to point out that an incursion from the sea would make no sense from a strategic viewpoint.
If and when it happens, we’ll know soon after.

Last go around, Israeli troops were conspicuously gathered within view of the dividing line, hoping for an intimidation factor.
The Israelis now seem to have adopted a much more secretive and surprise strategy.
There is no evidence a ground invasion is taking place right now. Don’t worry, there will be live-tweeting and live video within minutes of anything major. In the meantime, I expect feints and hit-and-run.

I just read a report from the Telegram, a British paper which says they have a reporter on the ground who is reporting a column of Israeli tanks is advancing into Gaza.
I think the only question now is how limited or not the operation will be.
I doubt the goal is even to eradicate Hamas, just degrade it to the point they aren’t a real threat for some time into the future.
