I think The Comancheros deserves a special mention. The attention to geographical accuracy (taking place in the desert-like terrain, among the cactus and mountains, so prevalent between Galveston and Louisiana) and historical detail (managing to combine 50 years of historical pieces and references into one current period) is noteworthy, even before one gets to the plot.
