Adult Swim's 'Black Jesus' Comedy Offends Christians With Pot-Smoking, Beer-Drinking Jesus

The new "Black Jesus" comedy has some protesting the depiction of Jesus as a marijuana-smoking, beer-drinking character in the show. Paul Scott, a self-proclaimed minister of the Messianic Afrikan Nation, has called for a boycott of the upcoming comedy, arguing that it "[makes] a mockery of the concept of a Black Messiah."

According to his blog, the North Carolina-based minister argues that "the show does a disservice to the Black leaders and theologians who have dedicated their lives to advancing a Black Liberation Theology," adding that he believes "the Black community needs to see a proper image of a Black Messiah in 2014."

Although the creator of this television show, Aaron McGruder, is a liberal, he has been one of the harshest critics of "Black Culture" in the last decade. He has attacked BET Television, the rap music scene, race-baiters like Sharpton and Jackson, welfare dependency, etc. Although much of his work comes across superficially as being racially "political correct", his underlying themes are all generally opposed to the self-destructive nature black celebrities and politicians.

His previous television series, The Boondocks, just concluded after four seasons. Interestingly, almost all contemporary depictions of racial prejudice where by black characters. I would not be surprised if this new series was a vehicle for satirical criticism of the welfare state.

Exactly. I don’t know why Comedy Central has these shows on. They aren’t funny. The concept is stale and banal. Its been done a million times before. It certainly isn’t “edgy” or “controversial.” Quite frankly, its pathetic. As you mentioned, a real “edgy” and “controversial” show would be “pot smoking Mohammed” who curses and sits around getting high. But we all know we won’t see that.

Sometimes I think, do we really need Christians to start killing people and slitting throats go gain some respect? I’m certainly not advocating that but it seems like the only way to get society to respect Christians. Our media elites will flat out tell you that the reason that they don’t ridicule Islam is because they are afraid.

This is Cartoon Network watched by children.

They really need to make “Adult Swim” a separate channel

Black Liberation Theology [...] a proper image of a Black Messiah

I'd be 100% in support of mocking Black Liberation Theology if they hadn't gotten Jesus involved.

Adult Swim cartoons specialize in the dark, depraved and disturbing take on life.

Cartoon Network's commercials for the Adult Swim shows are very informative: they show me exactly why I don't want to watch them.
