My sister, at about that same age, saw a woman(?) punker (this was the 80s) with wild, colored hair, etc. and screamed, "a clown, a clown!" I laughed, the woman(?) did not.

My brother did something similar when he saw his first black person, but it was far worse than asking if they were “chocolate.” I’m frankly surprised he and my mother survived the incident.

Years ago my 6 year old niece was visiting Cleveland OH. She was sitting in a diner with her mom, and she saw her first black people. She asked her mom if this is why the team was called the Cleveland Browns !!

That probably happened forty years ago and I still remember it.
