WICHITA, KS (KCTV) - Lady has had a tough life in recent months, but a Florida heiress who loves animals is vowing to make the lab's golden years truly happy.

Lab gets fairytale ending after 2 families reject dog Lady is getting use to her new home in Florida after a wealthy heiress rescued her from a Kansas shelter. Lady's story is worthy of a Hollywood movie. The grizzled black lab made national headlines when she walked 30 miles to return home to owners who had given her up and refused to take her back.

As word spread on social media, heartbroken dog fans swamped the Chautauqua County Animal Shelter telephone line as they sought to adopt the older dog.

After learning of her plight, Wrigley Gum heiress Helen Rich Rosburg flew a private jet to Kansas on Thursday to whisk the dog to her Florida sanctuary for neglected animals.

“Rosburg, the great-granddaughter of the founder of the famous gum, is a self-described animal lover. She has used a portion of her inheritance to help neglected and abandoned animals. She has built a 120-acre farm in Odessa, FL, that houses 300 animals including rabbits, pigs and goats. She even built an on-site home for a trainer to work with dogs dealing with behavioral issues. She reportedly has a staff of 15 to care for the animals, and eventually adopts out some of the animals or they are trained to be service dogs. “

It’s nice to know that there are a few truly caring people out there.

I’m glad that little fellow is getting better. Bless you for feeding him.

I used to feed a squirrel that lived in a tree in my mom’s backyard. When we went to visit her, that little thing would come bounding-—no exaggeration-—to meet us, and he would sit up on his hind legs and grab for the peanuts. I looked forward to seeing him.

but maintaining a dog of that age and in declining health is a big financial responsibility.

BS. The dog was able to walk 30 miles. Most people could not do that for God's sake!

Well we almost always get the rescues who show up abandoned in our yard or on our street. Have not gotten a loser yet. We could not have gotten two better dogs than Buddy our Beagle who just died at 17 plus years or Coco our cute little Chihuahua. We are waiting to see who shows up next. :-)

Yup...too many knee-jerk posters who didn't bother to read the article...

Shelter worker Kelsey Loyd told KWCH-TV Thursday that a family adopted Lady. She was living a good life, but was rough with the family's puppy and didn't get along well with little dogs.

I follow several dog rescues and shelters....it is common practice to return a dog who doesn't get along with other pets after an adoption. They stepped up and gave it a chance, it didn't work out.....not the dog's fault....if critters don't get along you can't force it. Better for all that the dog was returned, and had a chance to get the right home.

Poor dog. Glad she found a home. I hope the mugs who kicked her out get a spanking.

Yeah, they are so skittish around humans normally, but once they get to know you (and that you have food), they can get pretty comfortable with you.

I have a few that will sit right by my feet while they eat their peanut, so they can get another one as fast as possible. Those guys will even take a peanut out of my hand if I offer it to them. But there is probably only one really brave squirrel out of twenty that will get that close to you, and it takes a while for them to trust you like that.

You are wonderful! 40 dogs in 36 years - wow! My husband and I take in old rescue dogs as well. We’ve only had three. They are the sweetest things. I lost one of them a year ago - only had her two years. I thought I’d have her longer and was shocked when we lost her. She was eleven so I shouldn’t have been surprised.

I can’t even look at the photo of the old dog. She looks so tired, poor thing. We don’t have “Lassie” endings anymore, I guess.

You have to be quick to draw your hand back when they snatch the peanut, too...those little claws are sharp. I found out the hard way, LOL.

My wife and I had just moved in to our house. The second day she was at the front door with a bag of groceries. She unlocked the door and turned around to pick up the bag. As soon as she turned around a squirrel climbed up her leg and onto her shoulder. She screamed, shucked it off and ran inside.

Turns out the previous owner would feed the squirrel peanuts, with the squirrel on her shoulder!

“....only had her two years”

That’s about it with the older rescues. If you have them longer than that, count the blessings.

Absolutely. The problem with her death is that it was unexpected. No health problems, supposedly, and she ate her breakfast and was running around. She collapsed and went into shock. Internal bleeding. I’m still not over it although I got another rescue dog within the month. She’s a real cutie, too.
