My wife and I arrived in Mobile four years ago. As we drove from Pennsylvania into the deep South, I began to notice the subtle changes that became increasingly less subtle...

Having lived in the South (Austin and Memphis) for 9 years folks told me “Bless his/her heart”= They’re really stupid too.

The term “honey or sweetheart” is just a polite way of saying “hey you”.

Yes, in his conclusion, he says the waitress may have been fulfilling a role of Southern femininity, establishing the balance of power in her “relationship” with his as a customer, or rebelling against her lower status as a waitress, but did it every occur to him to realize she’s probably just being friendly? Not maternal, not sexual, just friendly?

Yes, I love them. Cute, intelligent, sassy, and at ease with themselves and the world. That is how Southern women are. IMHO.

Now true confession time. I lived in NJ till I was twelve years old and then we moved to Florida. It took some time to adjust but once I did I found I really did, and still do think of myself as Southern. Still can’t bring myself to like grits though.

I hate the sneering attitude so many so called educated Yankees have towards women in the South. They think we are oppressed doormats who are too stupid to appreciate their attempts to liberate us. Bunch of cross eyed cooters if you ask me.

Please don’t move here and eff it up worse than your fellow outsiders already have. :-)

Sorry, but they have already moved in from the North and have destroyed a major part of your State.

Atlanta and a few other major cities have been overrun and are quickly becoming another Detroit.

They are the Human form of Locusts; they destroy their local area and move on to destroy another wonderful location.

I was disappointed to find out that when a waitress called you “honey”, “sugar” or some other term of endearment, they don’t necessarily like you.

“Role of Southern femininity” “Balance of power.”, Oh my, trying to figure that out just make my little ole head spin. I declare I sure wish I could make sense of all this by my lonesome. I do rightly hope if I ask real sweet like and promise to bake a cake my men folk will take pity on me and explain it all.

Oh my I just thought of something. Being how I might be one of them low status wimmen maybe I ought just to be happy I don’t have to worry myself with such high ideas. Oh this is so confusing. I feel so unbalanced and unfeminine whenever I start getting above myself. Time to go get the silver out of the well and polish it.

Many years ago I arrived down south to adopt a baby. The trip down was awful terrible. The rental car was waiting for me sans the all important carseat.

I was trying to check into the hotel the agency booked for me. It was a horrorshow.(How much of a horror show you ask? The door to my room was in a glass strewn unlit alley.)

I was standing in the lobby asking the hotel to book me into any local upscale chain and the guy at the desk was calling frantically.

In walked the rental car employee with the carseat. I had a room booked at a decent hotel but it was dark and I had no idea how to get there. The rental car employee listened for a moment then said, Sweetie, follow me, and she drove to the new hotel and pointed it out. Wouldn’t take a tip either.

I was moved to tears.
