Eyewitnesses say the giraffe, one of two on a truck, hit its head on a bridge on Johannesburg's N1 motorway.
The vehicle then broke down and had to wait several hours to be repaired.
Both animals were then taken to a vet, but the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal (NSPCA) said one died on arrival.
The incident has created a stir on the social networking site Twitter.
There was "lots of blood", he tweeted.
NSPCA's manager Rick Allen confirmed that the giraffe had sustained a head injury but said that an autopsy was necessary to determine the cause of death.

Ohhhhhhhh! :(
wasn’t this scene just in a movie?
"Paging Captain Obvious, Captain Obvious please pick up the white phone..."
"Uh, it was determined the cause of death was either a low bridge or a giraffe who failed to duck.."
That’s an awful atory
If the GOPe has its way, that could have been someone’s wife.
And they thought I was the village idiot when I pointed and said “Duck!”
Hangover III
I hate it when that happens.
“Darwin Award” had to be self-inflicted.
I doubt the giraffe(s) in question had any choice.
What kind of numbnuts would drive a truck like that under a freeway bridge while hauling giraffes? This is the problem with employing truck drivers having IQs below 70. Either that or he was just a vicious SOB, in which case he should’ve been beaten to death by the mob.
The same mumbnuts who drive under bridges that are not tall enough all the time.
Had the local railway bridge hit twice in two weeks first one was a dumpster hauler who didn’t put his hook down.
The 2nd was a back hoe hauler who didn’t lower his boom far enough.
That not counting the normal semis who drive under and get struck on not tell enough bridges.
How was it the giraffe's fault?
You mean somebody actually saw that movie?
I saw it just the other day. I thought it was pretty good. Not as good a the first one, but definitely better than the second.
normal semis who drive under and get struck
I recall a story of this happening. The police, truck driver and an engineer were trying to figure out how to get the truck from under the bridge. All the while a ten year old boy kept laughing at them until one finally asked him what he would do.
The boy said, “Let some air out of the tires.”
I yelled, “DUCK!” But being a giraffe and not a duck.... I guess I coulda yelled, “GIRAFFE!”, but would he have known to duck? What if I yelled, “DUCK, GIRAFFE!”? That would be a quite a sight and probably cause any giraffe to raise his head in curiosity....
